“Circumstances” are pesky things. It’s easy to let them dominate who we are or allow others to be. When circumstances disappear though, we open up a whole new world of potential results in ourselves and others. Find out how below.
“Good men usually have around them somebody who expects them to be better than they have any intention of being.”
- Unknown, Albert W. Daw Collection I was in Grand Central Station, New York City, soaking up as much of the grandeur and history of the building as I could. It marked a great beginning of an unavoidable day-long journey back home from the Big Apple.
The trip began with a train to White Plains, a bus to Westchester Airport, a 16-seater (!) plane ride to Toronto Pearson Airport, a cab to Toronto and then a train and bus connection on the Ontario GO Transit System. The trip was punctuated with long security lines, missed flights, angry passengers, track signal problems and delayed trains.
Ten hours later, I stepped off the GO bus that drops me near my door. I was exhausted.
I walked in through the side-door of our home onto the landing that leads up to our kitchen. Samantha my 19 month old spotted my arrival and came bounding toward me with arms waving in the air, playfully yelling all kinds of welcoming sounds and wearing the biggest smile and brightest eyes you could imagine. She was so enthusiastic and trusting she leapt from the top stair into my arms without hesitating.
In HER eyes, I’m a hero.
I can do NO wrong. I’m a guide, a playmate, a superstar and frankly the best thing going (next to ice cream of course).
I FEEL like a hero around her because she treats me like one.
I’m swept away by who she is with me. She calls me into BEING the hero I am for her – full of energy, vitality and love.
In a nano-second all my “circumstances” vanish and the weariness of my journey drops away.
I’m home. I feel alive.
I’m the hero.
I AM.
Again.
Fieldwork:
Sam didn’t “see” a tired father at the door. She didn’t see my “circumstances”, she saw me as who I was for her - her hero - and she responded to THAT instead.
We are NOT our circumstances; we’re FAR bigger than the circumstances we can let rule our lives.
Becoming unstoppable is about looking past the circumstances to the possibilities beyond them. To do this we must first be responsible for how we’re viewing the situation or others. Only then can we give our version of a “hero’s welcome” and create the opening for a new level of result DESPITE the current situation.
Do you want to bring out the best in another? Here’s an approach to do it:
1. Think of, or imagine, a time when the person was being REALLY X (the quality you want to see, or know them to be).
2. Imagine the X they were in THAT time IS who they really are.
3. Listen BEYOND their current circumstances and how it may be showing up (ex. frustration, anxiety, low energy etc.). Choose to see them as the X person you’ve seen or imagined.
4. Respond naturally to THAT quality you know exists in them.
You might be surprised, more often than not, they’ll rise to the occasion.
