The dollar is the draw

Article Overview: We often use money as a draw for employees. The question that really needs to be asked is: Is that really what will draw the right employee to your door?

Dollar is the Draw

As you drive around you’ve undoubtedly noticed a host of “Help Wanted” signs. A wide variety of businesses and industries are finding themselves stretched thin by a lack of high calibre staff. This is due to both the current economic climate and also a shrinking workforce.

Employees are regularly drawn away by the lure of easy money and greater prosperity resulting in many of the “traditional” entry level businesses like fast food and retail feeling the pinch. If you find yourself looking for quality employees, here are three tips that will help you attract (and keep!) the person you need.

Rule #1: Create a Winning Ad. Consider what it is that your potential candidates may be seeking. For example, students may be looking for flexible schedules; skilled workers may be pursuing stability and security and mature workers may be looking for part time shifts or weekends off. When you are building your “Help Wanted” ad, be creative and tell people why working for you is such a great opportunity. Resist the “position description” style of advertisement and show your candidates what makes you special.

Rule #2: The Dollar is the Draw. In the current job market, employees are looking for competitive wages, enhanced benefits and opportunities for growth. These are the three primary needs of any job seeker. Ensuring your compensation package is competitive allows you and your employee the time necessary to build a relationship that can lead to long term employment.

Rule #3: Environment Equals Retention. While wages and benefits pull employees in, how there are treated once they work for you dictates how long they will stay. If you provide flexibility in scheduling, opportunities for professional development and build effective relationships with your staff, they are more likely to develop company loyalty and commitment.

Above all, remember to treat your staff with dignity, respect and trust.

Remember the dollar is the draw; however, a good employee is worth every penny you invest.

Go play sports, read books, do stuff, but always keep your mind open and ready to put things together to create that million dollar idea.

Euphemism for lawyer? Euphemism for lawyer? - [quote:2irdstnl]It is also key to have a qualified person draw up a contract for any agreement. [/quote:2irdstnl] Much as I dislike lawyers, it's a qualified laywer you need to draw up a contract for any agreement. Would anyone else be qualified to draw up a contract? I only ask because the phrase "a qualified person" makes it seem like there is someone other than a lawyer who can do this?

I fully agree with you in that you don't find great ideas, but they actually find you when the time is right. In fact, I'd say I get the majority of my best ideas right before bedtime, and I'm forced to write them all down before I forget.
