How do you know, if a company will do well in the future?

If you want to know whether a company will do well in the future, here is a simple but very accurate checklist:

  1. Are the most capable and efficient people in positions that match their capacities?
  2. Do these people have sufficient decision making authority?
  3. Are people in top positions capable, humble and close to their team?
  4. Do people wholeheartedly love what they do?
'Arrogant dragons will have to regret', goes a Chinese saying that is more than a thousand years old. It is equally true today, as it was then.

If you are an entrepreneur, make sure your company scores high on these criteria. If you are an employee, demand a position that matches your capabilities, but be humble and close to all others. If you work with a company filled with arrogant dragons, you better be gone. It is just a matter of time until the company will have to regret what such people will do or have already done to it.

Budgeting Approach Budgeting Approach - Budget is a roadmap for future operations of the company and it must be realistic. Here are some guidelines (extracted from my company manual) which I like to share with you. Each cost center in company will submit documentation defining the services provides and resources require. Each department is responsible for maintaining the accuracy of this document over time. Every department is encouraged to take a long-term strategic approach to providing its services. This approach entails an annual review of the costs that must be incurred to provide valued services (regardless of past practices) at the most efficient (and understandable) cost. Once this level of service and funding is established, increments to the baseline are considered. Ideally this would involve the following approach: a) Defining the current and future level of services provided, the resources necessary to provide those services and rationale for major change. b) Evaluate current operations and identify issues and the gaps to providing future levels of service. c) Look internally for cost saving measures or the elimination of services that are no longer required. It is assumed that before any funding request comes forward that it has the approval of the manager/director responsible for that department. d) Look cross-organizationally for resource allocations and efficiencies.

Learning from other people's mistakes (Books) Learning from other people's mistakes (Books) - Most business books are written by people who tell of success stories, and how they were achieved. I'm wondering if people learn more by reading about the stories of failure? Or about how people achieved success...and then frittered it away through bad business practice. I checked two books out of the library yesterday. Apple: The Inside Story of Intrigue, Egomania, and Business Blunders, by Jim Carlton (started as a startup in 1976, sales peaked in 1995, and even then they were a "troubled" company, and now they've only got a 3% market share. (And I must admit I used to love Macs, but don't anymore...) and Breaking Windows: How Bill Gates Fumbled the Future of Microsoft, by David Bank. "Breaking Windows" tells the story of the battle for the soul of Microsoft that raged inside the company from 1997 to 2000 and continues to reverbrate today." The book "breaks new ground in its analysis of Microsoft's past and future business strategies. As Microsoft faces the waning importance of Windows, rallies behind XML, and confronts the open-source insurgency, the past Bank reveals is vital to understanding the future of this company and the still unfinished digital revolution it helped unleash.

I am looking to make smallish investments in start-ups at the moment, but hopefully in the future I should have sufficient resources to consider other opportunities. I am not against being hands-on with a company but as I am very inexperienced, I would be looking to play perhaps a background role in order to gain some experience.
