How to Lead the Masses
Our universe and the global economy are unsettlingly
big places. Which, for the sake of our peace of mind and comfort, we do
our best to ignore as much as we can.
Let us
have another look at'A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' where we get
introduced to the forest planet Oglaroom in the outer eastern galactic
arm. On this planet the entire intelligent population lives on a tiny
and totally overcrowded nut tree. They are born there, live, fall in
love, work, fight the battles of daily life, and ponder about birth
control and the meaning of life before they finally die. For the sake
of a complete picture of their behaviours, I have to mention, though,
that a few Oglaroonians dare to leave the tree because they wonder
whether there are other trees that support life or if they are anything
else than just illusions.
What is true for the
Oglaroomians is true for us as well. Masses don’t lead, no matter how
intelligent they are. Masses are led. As a leader, do you show any
signs of nut tree behaviour? Are you unwilling to leave a cosy comfort
zone, take risks and expose yourself to your own vulnerability? Tough
questions, I know, yet very important ones. Especially if you expect
the people you lead to move out of their comfort zones and shape up.
That will be a painful exercise for them.
Whatever
you demand your people to do, demand the same of yourself and show it
openly. Making yourself vulnerable gives you a good feeling of what
your people are going through. And if they know that you experience the
same, they will follow you.
