Working women in the Middle-East - a look at the challenge (part I)

For most of the women born and raised in North America, being an independent woman is easy, a pre-requisite of our society, where women study, live, marry and work freely. It is called natural human evolution. I am not denying that even today, women are still under paid when comparing to men, however, this could be a topic for another Newsletter.

Saudi-Arabia and UAE is a traditional Muslim society where the teaching of Islam plays an important role in every aspect of life, politics, school, foreign relations and business. People look to Islam for direction and wisdom. If we look closely, at the Koran, it is said that women and men are equal partners, however if we compare to the reality of the regions, we note that there are clear differences between men and women in the workplace.
Saudi Arabia and UAE are both Islamic states; however the difference is on the angle of social culture, position of women in the workplace and in society.

Saudi Arabia is a more conservative society, where women are not allowed to drive, have no voting rights and until recently could not own their own business. Things have changed since the new Crown Prince is in place and the strategy to modernize Saudi Arabia is driving Saudi women to open up, achieve higher education levels and open up their own business. A recent report showed that women today own 17,300 businesses in Saudi Arabia, representing a huge improvement from previous era. Nonetheless, women are still facing barriers when applying to job opportunities in construction and engineering.

The new Crown Prince is trying hard to implement European specs into a rigid society, as he believes his country will flourish under new visions. His amendments started to leverage women and their capabilities to dominate new markets, especially foreign affairs. I can safely say that what I have noticed recently is satisfying, given that Saudi woman are driving a new era of economy.
The UAE are different, driven by a sustainable leadership, making it one of the most flourishing state in the Middle-East. Dubai for example, has seen more women owned business then men’s, and more successful! Women were always given the opportunity to drive, vote, own their own business and contribute to the political scene, nationally as well as internationally.

Dubai is driven by Muslim religion, similar to Saudi-Arabia, however society dictates a leaner behavior, heavily influenced by the US and Europe. Dubai has seen a tremendous growth in the past 10 years, specifically due to open doors allowing American, Canadian and European companies establish their foot print for business. These international relationships, have given the opportunity to a greater amount of women involved in foreign affairs, international law and politics.

Nonetheless, these women are yet to see their rights equal those of men working in similar fields. They still encounter psychological and physical harassment, insubordination from male employees and most of all, discrimination when it comes to specific job opportunities.
Being a consultant with Power ONE, I worked alongside many local women and men, many times on similar tasked projects, and the difference can be flagrant. Some women are more educated, more poised and possess greater communication skills then some men, and I have yet to see them earn the same respect as men when presenting for a local Board of Directors.

Luckily for local educated women involved in the workplace, the vast majority of international consultants working in Dubai are bringing with them this open door policy, giving more leverage to women across the board, hiring local women for highly technical jobs and ensuring they get equal promotion abilities when an opportunity is presented.

In the Middle East alone, women drive the economy with close to 1.7 million jobs and business—it is time to recognize this force and embrace the positive change!

Yes, You're Right Yes, You're Right - In the main I agree with this. Some women overcome it although I have often seen them full of guilt at their (self) perceived selfishness. I think women have a tough call to make which is pretty unfair for them and may leave years of hand-wringing over whether they did the right thing. Men are positioned differently and don't usually feel this. Great point and for my part I'm sad that it isn't more balanced as women have such a lot to offer.
Girls vs women Girls vs women - This is part and parcel of a post I made earlier in this folder, about men (and other women) referring to grown women as girls instead of women. Girls have to be "taken care of" by the man in their life, and aren't capable of making their own decisions. Someone wrote a column about this several months ago which appeared in my daily paper - and put it much better than I've been able to say it - unfortunately I can't remember the name of the person.... perhaps I should go do a google search and see if I can't find it...
Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? Re: What is Your Favorite Thing About Owning A Business? - [quote="freddyb45":1t3lpfi8]For me it's the fact that all the time and effort you put in is worth a lot more, due to it making you "business" more profitable. Working for yourself is also a positive, although employing people you can trust is quite different.[/quote:1t3lpfi8] I like this idea. Working for yourself means you are investing in your own future, not someone else's, although there is value in working for someone else first to gain experience and confidence. Working for yourself does not automatically mean success, fame and fortune. For most entrepreneurs, it takes much work and dedication to get to the point of financial success and comfort - sometimes years. But the benefit is, again, you know you are investing in yourself and building equity for your own future. GT :-]
2007 Mothers Day for Women Entrepreneurs 2007 Mothers Day for Women Entrepreneurs - A mom who has her own business faces an incredible challenge. Motivated by the need to put food on the table or to give herself the gift of accomplishment, she moves forward with her life and family while starting a new business. All women who start a business, have to start somewhere. Even those who purchase a franchise have to start with the education needed to run that particular franchise. The never ending juggle of Family, business and self begins. Finding balance can be a challenge. With outside input, women discover and utilize tools that will help them create the life and business that they want. One of the tools used to find things that can make business building faster and easier than they thought is the Wright Place TV Show Mother’s Day Special. The Wright Place™ TV Show is a 30 minute broadcast television talk show for women. ‘ We talk about strategies, techniques and mindset needed to grow ones business.” Says Dr. Wright, host of the show. “For the last 7 years, I have brought to the screen leaders in entrepreneurship who have talent in creating incredible businesses. They love to share and my audience gets the benefit of that.” The Mother’s Day Special evolved as a way to make women in businesses, which also happen to be mothers, feel appreciated. “ A few vendors got together and gave the audience these lovely gift bags.’ Says Dr. Wright. ‘From then on, every year, I would get requests from vendors to be a part of the show. People are interested in encouraging women who take a change to create the life and business they want. I look forward to seeing this live audience every year.” Last year’s show was presented by Jenny Craig. Jenny Craig, know for their weight loss products gave each audience member a goal setting kit created by Martha Beck. “This kit could be used for anything, not just weight loss or management. If women can use this to move themselves closer to a fulfilling life, then it’s the perfect gift.” Says Dr. Wright. Dr. Wright says she tries to look for things that are unusual yet exceptionally useful for today’s woman entrepreneur. You never know what kinds of things the audience will find in their gift bags.
