Leadership Coaching – Is It Right for You and Your Business

Written by: Theresa-Maria Napa

Article Overview: Within the last decades of the 20th century, coaching began to appear as an asset to help individuals successfully navigate through the quagmire of changes taking place at work and home. Leadership Coaching – Is It Right for You and Your Business

"Coaching will become the model for leaders in the future...I am certain that leadership can be learned, and that terrific coaches...facilitate learning."-Warren Bennis Professional training in the Information Age centered on the learner memorizing knowledge and then applying what was taught to the specialized field they pursued. To reach upper levels of leadership the path was to perform your role better than others and work your way up the ladder in a linear fashion. Leadership came from the top down. It is known as the command and control model.

In the command and control leadership environment coaching isn't generally viewed as an essential part of the training. The purpose of the employee is to work toward the vision of the company/organization they are engaged in with little regard for self-leadership development. However, we have been moving from the Information Age to what Daniel Pink, author of "A Whole New Mind," calls The Conceptual Age, which requires a new way of thinking to keep pace with the ever-changing environment.

Within the last decades of the 20th century, coaching began to appear as an asset to help individuals successfully navigate through the quagmire of changes taking place at work and home. The old system of following the leader started being transformed by leaders teaching others self-leadership within the circle of influence of the individual. Leadership development from the bottom up began to spring up to create teams of leaders.

For individuals and organizations to excel it is necessary to develop competencies and behaviors outside of the familiar. Coaching is one of the best investments an individual and business can make as a resource to transcend through the fast pace happening in today's world.

The power of the coaching relationship is based on the ability of the coach to hold the client's bigger picture agenda, while coaching through the everyday happenings toward the larger vision. Some of the lasting results a coaching client can expect are:

Presently there is an emergence of a conceptual age fostering "high touch" and the breaking into using your imagination and creativity as resources to materialize the lifestyle and career you want. This is the evolution of discovering you are smarter than you think!

Information overload has dramatically neglected the development of imagination and the use of the right side of the brain. Think of all the resources you have used to gather information to do what you do. How many of those resources actually stimulated your genius? Yes, you are more brilliant than you believe! And having the right coach with your willingness to explore your potential will awaken your brilliance.

Whether you want to excel at what you are presently doing or make a transition to something different, you can access the untapped part of your brain to higher levels of creative intelligence. Before something takes form, it takes creativity. Look around you. Everything you see, touch and hear started with an idea. Today's ideas are going beyond functional, which gives you the competitive edge and leadership necessary to keep pace today.

In the Information Age you were taught to memorize the data and then put it to use in your work and home life. Today you need to stretch yourself by developing your imagination to reach the horizons you are meant to reach.

In developing new competencies in self-leadership you will be amazed at what you can accomplish. After all - Anything Is Possible!

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Exclusive: Interview with Results Exclusive: Interview with Results - Hi Forum Members, I'm helping start up a Business Coaching and Consulting company here in Toronto, Ontario, Canada (a Subsidiary of RSC Business in Los Angeles). As a Research and Development Intern I am required to practice my listening and interview skills by surveying Small and Medium Businesses on thier Business. This Survey is designed by RSC Business to also assist the Business being interviewed more insight into their own business. I am looking to interview about 30 businesses across North America over the span of 3 months. At the end of these interviews I will be publishing a report of the results and they will be made available for free to the Interviewees. The Report data will include responses from a minimum of 100 interviews. I would like to extend this opportunity to members of the Forum. If you would like to have this short 20-30 minute interview conducted on your Business and you reside in North America please send me an email or PM. Please contact me at andy[at]jvprosperity[dot]com to arrange our interview and to get free access to the results when they are published.
Business Coaching Internship Review Business Coaching Internship Review - I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto. RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data. Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds! Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well. The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though. It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take. The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you. Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.

My entry My entry - 1. The Best Business Books Ever: The 100 Most Influential Business Books You'll Never Have Time to Read - this is a fascinating book about the history of Business theory, and I'd recommend it to anybody. 2. The Big Book of Small Business: You Don't Have to Run Your Business by the Seat of Your Pants, by Tom Gegax. Ditto. 3. PADI: The Business of Diving Book Okay, so this book won't be of use to anyone who doesn't want to start a scuba store, but I did, and this book was of course invaluable to me in reaching that goal.
