Written by: Theresa-Maria Napa

They do this by accessing their potential, which they put into action through training. It is progression from where the athlete comes to the game with her/his existing competencies and then enrolls in coaching and training to expand to her/his bigger game possibilities.

Leadership Strategies - The Bigger Game Competencies from A to Z

"One's philosophy is not best expressed in words; it is expressed in the choices one makes. In the long run, we shape our lives and we shape ourselves. The process never ends until we die. And, the choices we make are ultimately our own responsibility." Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) U.S. human rights activist, author, and First Lady

Executives, professionals, entrepreneurs or anyone in transition can have remarkable results by upping the ante to play a bigger game worth pursuing. There are unlimited possibilities. What restricts one from playing a bigger game is playing a game with the same competencies expecting better results. When engaging in a new game with the unchanged competencies you aren't playing bigger. In reality you are actually playing the same game!

For athletes to get to higher levels of achievement, they have to raise the bar to advanced self-awareness. They do this by accessing their potential, which they put into action through training. It is progression from where the athlete comes to the game with her/his existing competencies and then enrolls in coaching and training to expand to her/his bigger game possibilities.

For example, let's use the English alphabet as a metaphor in developing a bigger game. One would think it makes sense that to transcend from "A" (the present) to "Z" (the new future) it would be necessary to advance by gaining abilities in the mix of the remaining 24 steps "B" to "Y." However, what often occurs is people get anxious, fearful, doubtful, discouraged, and quit before they get to "C." They believe by working harder using the same tools and knowledge from the past they can transcend directly to "Z."

An innovative future with possibilities grows through process. The first step is to leverage where you are. That would be the "A" factor in following the "A" to "Z" allegory.

Questions to Determine "A" Factor - the present game:

Questions to Determine Reaching the "Z" Factor - your Bigger Game

Questions to Factor in "B to Y" to get from "A - the present game - to Z - your Bigger Game"

Between "A" and "Z" there are a number of challenges and opportunities. In this case there are 24 factor letters: "B" to "Y" with little "b's" through "y's" also available as resources. So you see, you have a wild range of possibilities to select from to reach "Z."

Tips to Transform Your Present Game to a Bigger Game

"Leadership is not so much about technique and methods as it is about opening the heart. Leadership is about inspiration-of oneself and of others. Great leadership is about human experiences, not processes. Leadership is not a formula or a program, it is human activity that comes from the heart and considers the hearts of others. It is an attitude, not a routine."-Lance Secretan - U.S. leadership author and consultant

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
