Leadership Tips - Leaders Make Use of Mess to Germinate New Solutions

"One's mind, once stretched by a new idea, never regains its original dimensions." -- Oliver Wendell Holmes

Did you ever get so deep into despair that there seemed to be no way but up - and yet you could have chosen to sink deeper into victimization. Oh, I have been there so many times when I stuck to disagreeable jobs and relationships like crazy glue. I rationalized with every conceivable ounce of my being why I should stick it out. I would tell myself: "Don't be a quitter." "Maybe this is the best it gets." "How will I make it?" "Jobs are hard to find now, I am lucky to have this one." And so on and so on!

Life is full of messiness - We can either clean up the mess or sit and stew in it. I admit that I have taken the role of victim as I simmered and felt sorry for myself. I have even invited my friends to listening to my sad stories. I am so grateful for friends and therapy when necessary. They are the best. They are my support during the good and bad episodes of my life. We need friends who care for us unconditionally and at the same time not be co-conspirators in our mess. They hold us creative, resourceful and whole, trusting we will get past the situation and onto new positive perspectives.

Staying down in the muck only brings more muck. I don't like it! One of the synonyms of muck is manure! Well manure is a great metaphor for seeing opportunities when none seem possible. Manure is used for fertilizer! It helps grow plants, flowers, crops and I am sure there are other positive uses for it. You can choose to be a victim of manure or choose the prospect of being a leader rather than following the path of least resistance.

The leadership path, whether personal or professional, is using the manure to fertilize new possibilities from the mess. Checking out what is working and what is not. Those on the path of leadership ask a lot of questions such as:

1. What is the outcome I want?

2. What is the impact of the outcome?

3. What is at stake?

4. What are the advantages and disadvantages in moving forward?

5. What difference will it make in my life/career?

6. What changes can I expect to emerge?

7. Where are the resources/networking opportunities?

8. If I don't take action, what are the consequences?

9. Would I rather be right or be true to the vision by listening to other perspectives?

These are some of the inquiries to investigate before getting to the how. Taking the leadership approach, rather than sitting and stewing incessantly, is a healthier more rewarding path, which pays dividends in all areas of your life.

TIPS

• Mark time on your calendar to ask yourself the above questions. If you don't take the time to imagine and fertilize new dreams and solutions, who will?

• Look to friends who support your potential. To mingle with people who bring more attention to the undesirable aspects of the situation will attract more of the same. Choose your support wisely.

• Unless you have a definite path you have decided upon taking, start with "what if" ideas. Example: What if I were president of my company, what would that feel like? What if I were interested in being an astronaut, what would I do next? What if I had the team of my dreams, what would the team be doing? What if I owned my own business, what would it be?

• In searching for new possibilities watch out for the "how's." This will stop you on your tracks as your inner critics begin sabotaging every idea.

• It is good to get in the mess and stir it up. Don't allow circumstances or others to take your power. You are not powerless. You are always at choice even when you are in the muck!

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Business Tips Business Tips - How about: Tips for managers to handle employees more effectively? Tips on how to deal with difficult customers? Tips on how to deal more effectively with suppliers? The only three I have in mind right now, but will try to come up with something else. Chris
Patent Walk-Through Patent Walk-Through - Hello everyone! My name is Alex, I'm 18 years old and I'm constantly drawing up new ideas and inventing stuff. I sketch stuff down everywhere I go and on anything I can write on. I'm a big member of our local Future Business Leaders of America chapter (FBLA). In the future I hope to work my way up to being a Venture Capitalist. I think of myself as a pretty creative person who is very motivated. Some of the ideas and inventions I come up with are pretty far out but others I consider marketable and to have great potential. Being 18, I have little to no connections and no resources. I've been surfing this site pretty frequently for the last year and have finally decided to join the forum group. Anyway, here's my question... Basically, I have no idea how to get a patent together the costs and the overall process. As of now, I think I have a great idea that, as far as I know has not, ever been done before. I'm really excited about this idea. I'm a total novice at this and am willing to learn all that I can. Any information that you can provide me with would be great. Again the main things I want to know are: 1.Overall Process. 2.How Long It Takes. 3.Costs. 4.Anything That You Think I Should Know. 5.Tips/Experiences. 6.Confidentiality. 7.Must I Make A Physical Model of My Idea? Thanks guys! -Alex
Re: Website Name Help Re: Website Name Help - Its good that you have come up with the idea of setting up a website for your business. Now As it is into Business Solutions, I would recommend that you also include this into the name of the website. This will help you getting better results as far as SEO is concerned. You can start building a brand with this name. As you have already got the name booked, you can try changing it to something on the lines of Business Solutions as in azimabusiness or azimabusinesssolutions. Its a long name but still is good from the SEO point.
Help me name my moms business Help me name my moms business - I think Infinity Cleaning Services sounds better than Elite Cleaning Solutions... Why the Solutions? What is there to be solved? You simply get a rag with some Windex on it and wipe away.... plug the vacuum and Vac Away, get a mop and mop away. Stick to Infinity Cleaning Services... ICS sounds cool...
