Self-Leadership Success - How to Mend an Interrupted Dream
"Yesterday's success formula is often today's obsolete dogma...We must continually challenge the past so that we can renew ourselves each day."-Sumantra Ghoshal (1948-2004) Indian management theorist & academic
When I wrote the title for this article, it got me wondering if one can mend a dream. (I sometimes write a title that comes to my mind intuitively and it starts my writing process.) I am thinking specifically of our dreams during sleep. I do not have an awareness of my dreams during slumber. On the rare occasion where I do see dreams during sleep and it gets interrupted, I want to go back to the dream to see the outcome. But it doesn't happen. It is gone!
The dream is gone. It is part of the past. Who hasn't had their dreams interrupted! Who hasn't seen their dreams of a better lifestyle go to pieces? Who hasn't been a victim of ill health? Who hasn't seen loved ones depart? Life is a mystery. The galaxies are a mystery. Dreams are a mystery. I don't know about you, but I like a good mystery. Dreams are about the mystery of your journey with all the twists and turns, the good times, the sad times, the beauty and the passion of thriving and playing full out.
Should you languish over the past and try to relive it, you can't! Nothing stays the same. You may want to hold onto what once was, but the dream as you remember it is gone. That isn't to say you should ignore the wonderful memories and attributes of your past dream. These qualities which are still alive can be used to mend the interrupted dream to new wonders and possibilities.
During this time in history many dreams have been interrupted, which cannot be relived. But new dreams can be activated drawing from the past and creating new possibilities. It is never too late to start again. After all what is the alternative? Do nothing and give your power away to limited thinking? I don't think so! It is too high a cost to pay when you have the power to turn things around.
Eleanor Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States during World War II where unimaginable interrupted dreams existed globally and personally. However, that didn't stop her from being a human rights activist, author, speaker and taking the high road during a difficult marriage. She said and proved "You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do."
TIPS to Mend an Interrupted Dream:
- Granted turning things around may take time, but if you begin with what matters to you then you have started the process of bringing a different dream to life. Living the blame game only attracts more negativity.
- Firm transformational decisions require heightened self awareness and stronger self-leadership. These decisions should come from your heart. It more than likely will necessitate developing new skills and keen emotional intelligence to facilitate your desired outcome.
- Look to the past to a situation where it was unlikely that you were going to succeed and you did. Where in your scholastic years did you excel? Where in your personal life did you make a change where the decision was difficult, but it was to make a change for the better? What achievements in your career required leadership and commitment?
- Mending your heart requires solitude and reflection, which doesn't include beating yourself up. Have compassion that you did the best you could and if you would have known better you would have done better.
- Trust your intuition. Be careful you don't start negotiating with your intuition. Trust is important in believing in yourself and ability to SOAR.
- Make a list of your strengths and values of the discoveries you made from following the above tips. From these personal quantifiers choose the top five strengths and values to create a mission statement to open your heart and access your imagination to opportunities.
- Create an environment and engage the support of mentors or a coach to get you on the Right Track and keep you focused.
- Remember: Anything is Possible as you mend a broken heart and interrupted dreams and allow the Source within you to shine brighter!
