Staging Your Next Leadership Act - 4 Tips for Success
"All the world's a stage; And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages."-William Shakespeare (1564-1515) English poet and playwright
Think about the numberless choices you make every day from the time you wake up. How do you start your day? Do you log in to one of your favorites social networks? Do you have breakfast? What will you wear? Where will you be going? Who are you having lunch with? What are your plans for the day? Who will you be interacting with? Which mode of transportation will you be using? What feelings do you have about your life/career? You get the idea.
The point is to notice how many decisions and actions you take each day which are proactive and based on a bigger vision of self, and which are acted upon mindlessly. Daily activities are initiated from choice with a purpose. But what is the purpose? What is the reason for the purpose? The majority of people live with a microscopic vision of making it through the day. Making it through the day and waking up to another day of the same is limiting and lifeless. It also cheats you from evolving into the leader you are meant to be and generating the abundant life you desire.
Everyone is a leader in their life and each chooses what role to play at any given moment. There are many leadership roles individuals portray, such as parent, citizen, business professional, friend, sibling, etc. Regardless of the role being performed, values and purpose show up. As intangible as they are they speak volumes.
And if the world is a stage, what roles are you playing? Are you the star of the play or cast member supporting the vision of the play? Either part is one of leadership. It may appear that the star player is the strongest leader, but the supporting member of the cast is also a strong leader when viewed from their personal goals. It doesn't require one to be reach fame and celebratory status to be a leader. This is your play, your next act to create.
Tips & Questions for Staging Leadership Success
• Creating your next act is going to require getting uncomfortable. Uncomfortable in the sense of your thoughts, feelings and actions. Change starts to stir up uncertainty, fear and doubt which results in choosing to be reactive and taking the road of less resistance. That road is one of followers. You are a leader. Choose differently! You will win when you get on your right track.
• Create a compelling vision of where you see yourself in 5-10-20 years. People won't remember what you did professionally as much as remembering you for the difference you made.
• Develop your imagination. Create a play with a story as you see yourself developing within the next 10 years. Who are you? What are you doing? Why are you doing it? What are your relationships with those in the play? What are the colors you see? What is the music being played? Who is the audience? This is your next act. What does it look and feel like?
• A play requires a crew to support the action. Who are you using for support, motivation, coaching, and training? Having someone to activate, help you sustain momentum and hold you accountable is vital to success.
• Remember: Anything is possible. You can achieve the success you desire if you believe and move forward with a burning desire.
