Building Confidence
Knowing how to do the job. The ability to make decisions. The satisfaction of a job well done. These are all characteristics of one who may show a manner of assurance. Setting aside a clean and organized work area, how an individual performs affects the environment. The goal is to provide a setting which portrays confidence.
Do we often find ourselves in situations where we are making someone else's decision? Is it apparent that we or someone else does not know how to perform a task? Have we completed one project only to immediately begin another?
Our coworkers, patients, business partners, and other customers desire an atmosphere of confidence. There are occasions when acting confident isn't enough. People are discerning, and can often tell when an individual is not self-assured. The only way to address this appearance is to address those areas which impact our confidence.
BNET Editorial provides some tips on building confidence in others and ourselves -
- 1) Decision time. When a situation arises that requires a decision, seize it as a learning opportunity. Rather than make the decision for a competent person, ask that person to share what he/she thinks would be an appropriate action.
- 2) Be brave and ask. Rather than trying to appear to know what we're doing, accept that not everyone will not be persuaded. More importantly, learning how to do things right is simply the right thing to do. People will respect an honest inquiry rather than detect that one is trying to act.
- 3) Celebrate the successes. BNET writes, "Never underestimate the power of celebrations...All societies use celebrations to reinforce their shared purpose and reflect on their achievements..."
