Communication, Respect and Trust
As a sales and marketing professional I suppose I am more sensitive
than others to the at times generalised perception/portrayal of sales and
marketing professionals as bounders and vagabonds. I know our society has
changed but there is still this awful underlying sense that only certain
professions and activities have any value. This was brought to a head recently
on a message board where a contributor made the following statement
Fundamentally a damn
good marketing consultant is a first class highly convincing liar.
Funnily enough the contributor is
an accountant who frequently attacks the accounting profession for not giving
good service. The issue I have though is with his overriding cynical view. A
cynic was well described by Henry Ward Beecher in the following terms.
The cynic is one who
never sees a good quality in a man and never fails to see a bad one.
From my perspective as a Business
Mentor I can say that all professions and occupations have value and the
underlying issue is the lack of respect people have for each others specialty.
Businesses are built by teams of people bringing different skills to ensure the
mutual success of the venture. Teams succeed by building up trust which in
itself is built by having respect for each other. The respect comes from good
communication and an acceptance of the value of the members of the team.
I have written separately on the
value of having good financial support and I could write a similar piece on the
value of the engineer/technician in the organisation who comes up with the
technical product, service or solution to the product deliverable.
Cheap comments describing sales
and marketing people as liars is not respectful. I would say again that
businesses are built by teams of individuals, some who work full time and some
who are contracted in to deliver value. So if you find that there is discord in
your team with a lack of respect due to poor communication then give me a call.
I can help bring the team together to deliver those key shareholder objectives.
