Communication, Respect and Trust

Article Overview: As a sales and marketing professional I suppose I am more sensitive than others to the at times generalised perception/portrayal of sales and marketing professionals as bounders and vagabonds. Communication, Respect and Trust

As a sales and marketing professional I suppose I am more sensitive than others to the at times generalised perception/portrayal of sales and marketing professionals as bounders and vagabonds. I know our society has changed but there is still this awful underlying sense that only certain professions and activities have any value. This was brought to a head recently on a message board where a contributor made the following statement

Fundamentally a damn good marketing consultant is a first class highly convincing liar.

Funnily enough the contributor is an accountant who frequently attacks the accounting profession for not giving good service. The issue I have though is with his overriding cynical view. A cynic was well described by Henry Ward Beecher in the following terms.

The cynic is one who never sees a good quality in a man and never fails to see a bad one.

From my perspective as a Business Mentor I can say that all professions and occupations have value and the underlying issue is the lack of respect people have for each others specialty. Businesses are built by teams of people bringing different skills to ensure the mutual success of the venture. Teams succeed by building up trust which in itself is built by having respect for each other. The respect comes from good communication and an acceptance of the value of the members of the team.

I have written separately on the value of having good financial support and I could write a similar piece on the value of the engineer/technician in the organisation who comes up with the technical product, service or solution to the product deliverable.

Cheap comments describing sales and marketing people as liars is not respectful. I would say again that businesses are built by teams of individuals, some who work full time and some who are contracted in to deliver value. So if you find that there is discord in your team with a lack of respect due to poor communication then give me a call. I can help bring the team together to deliver those key shareholder objectives.

Respect?!? Respect?!? - Hi there, A successful business depends on ongoing series of transactions. This inlvolves people. To what extend is respect important? When one thinks of himself alone, like me, me and me, how can respect become real? How many types of respect can we come up with? I think of a few: Respect of disagreement can be one. Then there is Respect of the Customer. Respect of position. Respect of 'Older Person'. By the same token, Respect of the 'Younger ones'. etc..... Has anybody got any other ideas on this subject. Re: Is being too connected pushing your business forward or back Re: Is being too connected pushing your business forward or back - Being too connected can push you back. A few weeks ago my wife gave me a blackberry. It can be a distraction. Top performers are good at sorting out priorities. Respect your time and your prospects will too. Try to end every call with your prospect wanting more.

Business Coaching Internship Review Business Coaching Internship Review - I joined in during the first phase of the internship and at this point we are committed to doing research and development of RSC Business Group operating in Toronto. RSC Business Group already has products and services in Coaching Small businesses in Los Angeles but we didn't want to assume that the same products were wanted and needed in the Toronto market. Our goal at this point is to commit to interviewing 1000 business owners to capture this data. Through the teleconference internship I've been involved in we've been focusing on Communication Skills and on active listening which are practiced when we conduct our interviews and Coach our clients when they come on board. This is a lot harder than it sounds! Part of the internship is also creating the Toronto RSC Business Group's departments, job descriptions, Marketing and Communication plans etc that a business owner would create for their own company. This trains us in the way we would coach a company as well. The internship is phased in two parts and there is compensation plan involved as well for the clients you personally bring in. These clients are coached directly by Robert Chun as you begin but you are given a chance to learn his techniques. I haven't gone through this experience yet though. It's hard to explain Robert Chun's method of Coaching as it happens at a psychological level in his ability to listen and question the person being coached into the next steps they need to take. The Teleconferences are 2 hours long but it's very interactive. If you have a desire to explore this area of Business I'd recommend contacting Vwodek listed above and get invited to a Coaching Conference call. You can decided then if it's for you. Note: it is a commitment but the skills you walk away with whether you plan on working with RSC Business Group or not is invaluable.
