Mentoring Management Commandments

Mentoring Management Commandments

My experience as a business mentor has shown that no matter what the SME business, the owner/MD has the same issues. These are usually

v Lack of a plan

v Lack of trust of their team

v Working too hard at doing the job

v Not planning or directing the business

In response I developed the following commandments for MD’s to have on their walls; I share them with you.

Thou Shalt

v Commit to a plan and stick to it

v Set clear, measurable objectives with timescales for the company and the team

v Involve your board and management (team) in the plan so they can own the objectives

v Listen to your team

v Have regular reviews on plan performance

v Only get involved if the plan is not being met

v Understand others are not as talented as you and that you need them

v Let them make mistakes; it is reasonable and how they will learn

v Become an adviser not a doer

v Focus on your role agreed in the plan

v Enjoy Change

Thou Shalt Not

v Change the plan unless in dire need

v Change the objectives without consultation

v Make decisions without consultation

v Do things for others

v Get impatient

Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Ladies, I had an idea on how we could really offer some support to one another here on the Forum. I thought it might be fun if we invited one of the Ladies here to put her business in the spotlight. Then we could all have an opportunity to do a little Peer Mentoring. After a specific length of time, we could then open it up for the next woman to present her business. What do you think? Do you want to be the woman who gets some free tips first? If so, tell us your situation and we'll get started! I'm looking forward to hearing what you think. Warmly, Tami
