Mentoring to give you space
Mentoring to give you space
I mentioned in a previous article the quotation variously
attributed to E M Forster and others
“How can I know what I think, until I hear what I say?”
I would add a further phrase to
this
“… and understand what I feel?”
In today’s busy society, business
or otherwise there is constant pressure to do and be something or someone.
Focus is all about activity to achieve results. In my previous article I
advocated the point of Stopping, Listening and then stating what you think.
However at times that can tend to focus too much on the intellect and not
enough on the emotions.
The pace of life, the pressure of
finance forces MD’s and their teams to look at issues in a financial way, as a
balance sheet of assets and liabilities, of incomes and expenditures. But
business and entrepreneurship is also about feelings, gut feelings. At times,
in my experience, too much emphasis is placed on the intellect and not enough
on the feelings that an idea or venture may bring.
To lead in business one must be
in touch with ones feelings. How does one do that? Well the first thing to do
is give oneself the space to touch those feelings. Which then gives us the
partner phrase to the one above
“How can I understand my feelings if I do not give myself
the space to touch them?”
So in fact the MD and his team
need to
“Stop, Listen, Feel and State!”
Mentors like me give MD’s and
their teams the space to do this. To take breath and review without the
pressure.
So make a date in your calendar
and name it your listening and feeling day. And also give me a call and ask me
to listen, to be that external ear and restate clearly just what it is you are
saying and feeling. By hearing me repeat what you are saying, thinking and
feeling you will be much clearer in understanding yourself and so better able
to giving direction to your team.
