I was reminded this month as to just how important people
are to an organisation and especially those who lead it! They inspire and
excite rather than sap or depress
They simplify the message and
empower their team to deliver. They make the difference between success and
failure. It is my privilege as a Business Mentor to to meet such individuals.
My first example has been running
his business for 30 years and grown it to a substantial turnover of £20Mn with
more than 50 employees. He is over 65 but his energy would put a 30 year old to
shame. His drive and skill has enabled the company to be the leader in its
field. But he was also able to acknowledge his weaknesses to me and change his
way of working to create a new board and a new organisation. I never cease to
admire his strength of purpose when we review his activity.
My second example I met this
month via my Merger and Acquisitions activity on behalf of a client. He had
worked in his industry for various companies for many years and was made
redundant a few years ago. He was able to use that setback to create a new life
and business which he has built all on his own. He did this by getting in front
of clients and showing he could provide a real value added service. More than
that he was able to demonstrate a level of trust such that his customers now
place orders on him and do not even query the price. They understand he will
work for them and their interests. My client can see the value in him as much
as the business he might bring.
My last is a great example of a
son taking the family business to another level. His father set up the business
in the 1960’s and the son joined him some 20 years ago. Sadly his father died seven
years ago and so he took over. I am convinced the father would be so proud of
his son to see how well he manages the business and how he has managed to build
the level of customers and turnover. I have been called in to help him manage
the growth and help build a team but it will all be on the foundations he has laid
with his clients and his staff.
All three examples demonstrate
the necessity to have a good leader. Someone committed to delivering value and
giving their all for their clients and their team. Valuing a business is part
of my frame. I never underestimate the value of the leader in the business and
his ability to make things truly happen. If you would like some help in this activity
then just give me a call.
