3 Ways Around Workplace Roadblocks

If you were to list the main barriers to success, what would you put in the number two spot?

Number one is usually around cash flow, and entrepreneurs often have to be creative and clever to keep dialing for dollars.

Number two spot usually goes to workplace relationships. Even if you are a solo flyer, you still have tons of people to communicate with day after day. Some relationships are simple and get good grades, others are the ones that cause either gray hair or the desire to pull it out of your head altogether.

Workplace relationships are the elephants that sit in the middle of the room taking up all the space for real work to get done, they are the phantoms that lurk in the corners scaring people into staying silent and not bringing suggestions or kick-ass ideas to the table.

In our Total Leadership Connections program we offer the way around workplace relationship roadblocks, that most annoying and illusive area of building and sustaining a business. Here are the three main ways to consider removing the big boulders, the way OUT, that sit in the way of your dreamed-about ultimate success:

• OBSERVE: The more you are able to read your own behavior patterns and reactions, the more you are in control of any situation. Once you see that you are always angered by avoiders, you can learn how to talk with them in a way that does not cause them to run out of the room. Tthey can be coached to stay and be part of the solution. The 13 patterns of behavior most visible in any office setting can be tamed and you can lead around the obstacles

• UNDERSTAND: As you learn more about yourself and the reasons for your reactions, your self-awareness is a comfort to your employees and customers. You do not have to explain where your behavior originated; work is not a rehab facility! However, when there is a sureness of footing in the leader, it gives others a sense of safety in uncertain times and a willingness to follow your directives to get past the tight spaces with very little leg room.

• TRANSFORM: When you are able to express your emotions and give the safe space for others to do the same, it builds morale. When you attempt to hide your feelings from others, mirror neurons kick in (this is the social brain in action -we really do feel what is not said) and everyone around you senses something is wrong and automatically feels threatened. Being spontaneous and authentic actually makes people feel good, and that is good for business.

The best way around the big rocks and steep slopes of workplace relationships is to be the catalyst to create an atmosphere that promotes openness and a sense of belonging. Your colleagues and employees will thank you by buying your products, increased loyalty to your company and letting the world know you are a brand to be trusted.

Developing leaders and transforming teams is my speciality. As a clinical psychologist I know that we bring the behaviors we learned in our original organization, the family, into our present work organization. The key to leadership is understanding how individuals form a system and how that system impacts the bottom line. I have worked globally and find that the core of relationships is much the same whether in California, China,or Chile. My book "Don't Bring It to Work (Jossey Bass) offers tools and strategies for developing collaborative work cultures and important core techniques for entrepreneurs to have motivated and fast moving teams. I am a speaker at national conferences, radio, and television. You can follow my blogs at  http://www.sylvialafair.com/blog/ . Re: What to do at the first roadblock? Re: What to do at the first roadblock? - Roadblocks are usually established in locations that prevent easy avoidance , offer ample parking for interrogating suspected law violators and issuing tickets , and usually in places and during times that will not cause serious traffic tie ups , although there have certainly been exceptions. The stated purposes of roadblocks are usually legalized excuses to stop and scrutinize motorists for which there would otherwise be no reason to do so. These excuses include "sobriety checks," license and registration verification , possession of insurance , proof of citizenship , and seatbelt usage. The desired effect is to establish a sense of fear and intimidation among the population. The pity is that it works , as far as the "desired effect" is concerned. Even if the courts disallow roadblocks for certain purposes , e.g. the recent cases prohibiting roadblocks from being used to identify drug users or couriers , the enforcement agencies just claim another purpose for the roadblocks and it's business as usual. The courts have gone out of their way to allow the police great latitude in what they can do , once they have you stopped and under their control. The point of the above discussion is to suggest that you engage the roadblock process from the standpoint that the current courts find them legal and a legitimate law enforcement tactic. Therefore , there is little to gain by launching into a tirade over the constitutionality of roadblocks , at least while you are stopped at one. However , this is not to say that all your rights are null and void once you enter a roadblock..............

Where to print a book Where to print a book - [quote:39vg8s93]So, writing a chapter a day, I finished in a month, and Kidpreneur: Genius Ways for Kids to Pay For College was born. Currently my book is self published -- I just printed up 100 copies to give to all the people featured in the book, teachers, and some more to sell at $20.00 a piece (it costs $10.00 a copy at Kinko's, so it's not really an outrageous price). [/quote:39vg8s93] If at all possible, you need to stop using Kinko's now and go price some real printers. It should cost only a couple of dollars a piece, if that, to print your book. Admittedly you'll have to buy in bulk, but the overall savings - selling a $2 book for $20 so that you make an $18 profit instead of a measley $10.... is something every kidpreneur should think about!
