Entrepreneur Education: Hype Will Not Help You Succeed
What have we learned from the personal and professional self-help "how to" books of the past ten years? They don't really help, especially when there are challenges and crises right in your face. All the visioning and dreaming without putting real skin in the game are simply smoke screens; all the motivational books and speakers who tell you how they became so super successful forget to say it is from your hard earned dollars that they made their bundle.
Think of it this way, "the laws of attraction won't pay the mortgage". Too many of us were so busy wishing on a star we kept our heads buried in the sand as the economic skies were falling around us. So, the big question now? What is there to replace the frilly advice often filled with cotton candy?
There are some really good books that can help us look for deeper answers to our most pointed questions about how to sustain and then thrive in the next decade. It is about searching for purpose; it is about wanting to make a difference, it is about finding a place for skills and talents that can be of service. It is about sustainability.
Stop for a moment and think about your dreams and desires when you were starting your career. The times you sat alone or with a favorite friend and talked about the future and your place in the world. I bet you talked about more than just getting money in the bank or a new car.
Take some time now to sit quietly and see where you have sold ourselves to the material promise of the good life that leaves us still lacking. It is a time to look at what you learned from your family and what lessons you want to carry into the future and those that have no real sustaining value. It is a time to think about what it means to find our individual purpose, as well as where you fit in the connections with family, friends, community and planet.
Two books that can help are Daniel Pink's book, "Drive" that gives clues to the deep level to motivate us. Couple that with my book "Don't Bring It to Work", that offers a discussion of the family patterns that are passed from generation to generation and become the basic behaviors we take to the workplace. Both books will give you a great start to rethink who you are and what you really want as you move through the complexities of this ever challenging century. Happy exploring!
