Leadership Education: Don't Burn Bridges

Do you know an organization where everybody is happy? Do you know a firm that is conflict free? Do you know folks who get along so well there are never tensions and annoyances?

The only place I have ever seen that kind of perfection is in a film called "Pleasantville". If you have never seen it, you will learn tons about human nature in those few hours it takes to watch transformation occur, (oops! I gave away the ending).

We all have a part of us that yearns for the perfection of peace. Sadly, we rarely take the time to explore what peace looks like, sounds like, feels like past superficiality of rainbows and bluebirds and violins playing softly in the background.

Here is a story from one of my coaching clients that nails the essence of working in a "happy place". The head of HR felt an employee, let's call her Louise, was taking too many days off for personal issues and questioned her abilities. The plea to fire her finally led to the reality. Several years later there was an opening that was perfect for Louise's skills.

She knew from others that Louise hated her present job and was looking for something more challenging. This job would fit the bill. Big question: could they transit through the rocky terrain of past hurts and frustrations?

Most will say "no", never call an old employee back and move to virgin territory. It is not easy to go where there was discomfort and where the blame game can be replayed.

Taking what my client had learned from the Total Leadership Connections program she told the HR Director she would handle this herself. A tough, yet vitally alive conversation ensued.

The end of the old story and the beginning of a new one has led to a wonderful collaboration. Just know there were many "I never knew that" and "Wow, I'm sorry you felt that way" and "What could we have done differently"?

The key here is relationships all go through many peaks and valleys and those who are willing to search for and tell the truth can transform work relationships, actually all relationships, from average to extraordinary; it just takes the willingness to push past out-moded beliefs and fears and take a leap of faith. My coaching client's comment "It's worth the sweat and discomfort to find a new and better way. Tell your readers to 'go for it' ; there is magic in telling the truth!

Developing leaders and transforming teams is my speciality. As a clinical psychologist I know that we bring the behaviors we learned in our original organization, the family, into our present work organization. The key to leadership is understanding how individuals form a system and how that system impacts the bottom line. I have worked globally and find that the core of relationships is much the same whether in California, China,or Chile. My book "Don't Bring It to Work (Jossey Bass) offers tools and strategies for developing collaborative work cultures and important core techniques for entrepreneurs to have motivated and fast moving teams. I am a speaker at national conferences, radio, and television. You can follow my blogs at  http://www.sylvialafair.com/blog/ . Ivy League vs. Affordable school Ivy League vs. Affordable school - To play devils Advocate .... Prestigious school vs. Education I can afford? Does going to a prestigious school gaurantee success? I'm sure it helps - imagine the contacts made - powerful I assume. Also there is the pressure of being an alma mater of a school where everyone else is driven to succeed by thier parents. But, what if you got the "Education you can afford". It's still education. You are forced to analyze, engage in relationships, manage your school mates, and deliver on deadlines. What's the common denominator when you get out of school? Is it the ability to take action? The ability to see the big picture and then take the necessary actions to bring a project to completion? There's that action word again! what do you think?

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
