Making Friends is Part of Leadership 101

One of the powerful forces of the web is the ability it has to connect people in real, honest learning communities. What can be accomplished with the click, click of computer keys is truly miraculous.

We can see all sides of ourselves, the good, bad, true and ugly. When I was visiting at Google several months ago I stood watching the board showing who is searching for what all over the world. It was fascinating to begin to decipher themes that are there from Greece, Peru, Egypt, etc. I stood watching for maybe ten minutes when one of my colleagues shouted out, "OMG, that one just coming across is from my wife".

We are more transparent than ever before, more connected than ever before, and more in need of new, creative friends than ever before. This is no time to get stuck in a rut, the world is moving fast. Those of us wiling to hold hands and fly into the future together are the ones who will stay fit and happy.

That leads to a new friendship I am forming with a woman who lives in Malaysia. Her name is Shafizal Shahidan and she is a trainer of trainers for character building at the Malaysian National Services. She befriended me on Facebook after reading "Don't Bring It to Work".

One comment she made underscored what I believe; that there are human universals of behavior bigger than cultural differences and are like gravity, they impact all of us no matter where we live. Here is what she said' "Because of your book I have been able to see more clearly resistances to change, leadership crisis, and attitudinal shifts."

There was more; yet, here is how her Facebook helped me through a rather tough day: I was in process of moving from Santa Fe to Petaluma. It was a sad/happy day. When I was on the computer and looking at Shafizal's page I saw that she also had recently moved. Her comment to a friend was just right for me at the moment. It said "During this time of moving I keep singing row, row, row your boat life is but a dream!"

Those few words from a new friend anchored me and moved me past my sadness. I'm in my new home and still singing "life is but a dream".

Connections, leadership development, relationships that help, they are all around; It's a spectacular time to be alive and growing on our beautiful blue pearl of a planet.

Developing leaders and transforming teams is my speciality. As a clinical psychologist I know that we bring the behaviors we learned in our original organization, the family, into our present work organization. The key to leadership is understanding how individuals form a system and how that system impacts the bottom line. I have worked globally and find that the core of relationships is much the same whether in California, China,or Chile. My book "Don't Bring It to Work (Jossey Bass) offers tools and strategies for developing collaborative work cultures and important core techniques for entrepreneurs to have motivated and fast moving teams. I am a speaker at national conferences, radio, and television. You can follow my blogs at  http://www.sylvialafair.com/blog/ . Re: pitching Re: pitching - Friendliness is closely related to the concept of "permission marketing" as articulated by Seth Godin. The subtitle of his book says it all: "Permission Marketing: Turning Strangers into Friends and Friends into Customers." The old method was "interruption marketing" where you suddenly get an ad in your face whether you want it or not...
Making Money in 2011 Making Money in 2011 - Hello forum members! As we draw closer to the new year I thought it would be appropriate to change the title of our forum category "Making Money in 2010" to "Making Money in 2011" - I'm looking forward to some interesting discussions and wish everyone a prosperous New Year!
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
