Using the "F" Word at Work

How is this year comparing to last year? Are targets being met or is there an un-expecting downward slide?

Disappointments can bring up lots of words beginning with "F". Let's start with the most basic one: how do you FEEEL? Do you ever ask yourself or others that specific questions and do you really listen to the answer.

When you ask someone "how do you feel" you best be ready for a way different answer than when you ask "what do you think?"

Then there is the word "FLOW". What a great time of year to practice being in the flow. That is like the runner's high that comes from finding just the right momentum. One way to get into the flow is to give. We know in neuropsychology that giving to others ensures the flow of endorphins through the body that are connected with the runner's high.

Another "F" word to consider this year is "FORGIVENESS". Take a minute and think about any of your co-workers who have truly annoyed you this year. Then decide if there is a place in you where you can extend "generosity of spirit" and send them a humorous card, or an email simply stating that you hope they are well and you are thinking of them. Here are two more "F" words: FRESH and FAVORABLE.

And here is a great "F" word to add to your list "FUN". Can you begin to set some time in your schedule just for fun? Maybe it is a coffee break with someone at work who you enjoy and rarely take the time to connect with. Maybe it is taking a walk for fifteen minutes. Maybe it is treating yourself to one early day a month to just wander in a mall or finish a puzzle.

I bet you can add to this list. "F" words don't have to be nasty and negative. Make your list and keep it in a top drawer at work to remind you during the year to check your feelings, stay in the floe, consider forgiveness, and have some fun.

Developing leaders and transforming teams is my speciality. As a clinical psychologist I know that we bring the behaviors we learned in our original organization, the family, into our present work organization. The key to leadership is understanding how individuals form a system and how that system impacts the bottom line. I have worked globally and find that the core of relationships is much the same whether in California, China,or Chile. My book "Don't Bring It to Work (Jossey Bass) offers tools and strategies for developing collaborative work cultures and important core techniques for entrepreneurs to have motivated and fast moving teams. I am a speaker at national conferences, radio, and television. You can follow my blogs at  http://www.sylvialafair.com/blog/ .
