Discover the Benefits from the Most Ignored Resource

My observations, for the last ten years, on what resources are available for personal and professional growth, and how people use them have led to one key conclusion. To a great extend, people don't succeed because they ignore the most available and accessible resource-other people's experience.

Name any human enterprise and chances are that someone has done something on it. Whatever your life's endeavor is, there is somebody with knowledge or experience, and mostly likely both, that you can use immediately and start living the life you have envisioned. The use, expounding on existing knowledge and experience is the shortest and least bumpy path to your goals.

A few months ago, I wrote about how Lewis and Clark benefitted from a resource, Sacajawea, that they had not planned on when the left for the uncharted west. They benefited from her experience. How many doctors, engineers, lawyers or researchers just show up for work and expect to have spectacular performances without ever observing some experienced professionals

How do you make it a practice to benefit in life by using other people's experience?

  1. The first step is your willingness to learn from other people's experiences and change in order to grow and remain relevant in what you do. If you don't change as times change, then you are changed. You can never have progress without change. It's a tragedy to let the fear of doing something different shackle your future by stifling your growth.
  1. Have top notch clarity on what you need to learn. It is a waste of your time and that of the "guru" you want to learn from if you met with him or her and you had not taken the time to prepare specific questions. It's frustrating and you are not likely to be given another chance. Investing time to think and put your questions in perspective will provide the opportunity to have several items that have direct impact on your goals addressed.
  1. Have an open mind. It is amazing to find a solution for a challenge you are going through from a source you didn't expect. I have attended conferences only to get practical tips that take my business or life to new heights, from one of the other attendees and nothing from the featured presenters.
  1. Know that you don't have forever to learn everything you need through costly trail and error. In 1996, I learned the steps one needs to get a regular column in newspapers and magazines. It was written by someone who had done it for years. Within a relatively short time I was a regular columnist. There are endless stories of successful people in many areas of life and all attribute their success to what they learned from others.
  1. Develop the courage to say, "I need help" and do so before you are discouraged beyond recovery. It takes a strong person to ask for help. What happens if we don't ask? When I was a sophomore in high school in Kenya, I helped a teacher carry a gas cylinder from a bus station to his house. His wife was so thankful she gave me a cake. I had never seen a cake like that. Without hesitation, I just put the cake into my mouth and started chewing, only to find that the cake was wrapped with a paper that had to be removed before eating. Failing in your goals because you didn't ask for help is worse than eating a piece of paper
  1. Put what you learned into practice. If you have knowledge on something but you don't put it into action you are no better than someone who doesn't have the knowledge.

Dr. Vincent Muli Wa Kituku, a native of Kenya and resident of Idaho established Kituku & Associates in 1995 to provide new approaches for dealing with workplace challenges. He likens the unpredictability of change/challenges to life with water buffaloes that invaded African villages without warning, devastating social structures, uprooting the harmonious livelihood of villagers and leave them feeling insecure and stressed out. During chaotic times, people think that there is no solution for their perceptively overwhelming situation. They wonder, Why do we have to change from what we are doing? Some think they are not responsible for making change work. Vincent says, When a buffalo invades your village, you can not waste time blaming others, whining, or wishing it had not happened. His high energy, content filled and entertaining keynote and training programs challenge and inspire audiences for maximum impact mind shift. They learn how to set themselves apart at work and in life, re-discover talents and resources they need for growth, thrive by repeatedly providing exceptional services, be involved with something bigger than a career and move forward without leaving life behind. Step by step approach Step by step approach - Here's what I would do; Step 1 - Observe Wal-Mart’s target customers, what does Wal-Mart offer them? How long do they stay? Discover what it is that they might want or need that Wal-Mart doesn't offer, and then write those ideas down. Some ideas to get you started are - A cafe or fast food venue, something for the kids to do while the parents shop, etc Step 2 - Take that list, and weigh up the pros and cons of each idea, and then select the best one for you. Don't worry about not using all the space. Step 3 - Start the best business for you, and then release the other ideas to the general market and sublet the rest of the space to those who could fill some of the niches you've come up with, plus any they can come up with. If money isn't a factor then developing the building to suit multiple small leases may be a better option, as it's a diversified income, which is potentially more stable than one big income stream.

WHAT IN THE HECK IS THIS, I asked myself when I read that. Women are the fastest growing business owners in the US and Canada, there are t housands of women executives and CEOs - though not as many as might be expected, admittedly, yet the book opens with this surely out of date stereotype. However, as she continued to give examples of women who had high paying jobs but were routinely not paid as much as men because it hadn't occurred to them to ask for raises, etc., I decided it was probably true for a majority of businesswomen... Anyway, more of the info from the jacket: "Other books have told you how to get what you want by being more like a guy. How To Build Great Pillar Content For Your Internet Business How To Build Great Pillar Content For Your Internet Business - I’ve found that a successful Internet businesses must start with a solid foundation. As I’ve seen, most Internet businesses will integrate a blog onto their website and start to build a solid foundation of pillar content. Pillar content or pillar articles are posts that are written to help a consumer establish what your Internet business is all about. What Is Pillar Content? This termed was first coined by a famous blogger called Yaro Starak at his website Entrepreneur’s Journey. Yaro provides the following detailed definition: “A pillar is blog content, usually an article, which does some very important things: * It will bring in a rush of new readers and backlinks (other sites linking to your blog). * It will continue to bring in more readers over time as you and other people refer to it, even though it may be buried in the archives of your blog. * Eventually it will bring in traffic from search engines (this is largely because so many other web pages link to it). * You can list it in a separate area (like an articles page) with all your other pillars so your best content can easily be accessed and your value clearly demonstrated. * It is not time dependent, so in twelve months’ time it will still be relevant and popular.” Why Is Pillar Content Important? Looking at the bigger picture, pillar content is your foundation of your Internet business as it will continue to bring consumers and readers to your website. You may think that just having a product or service to sell is all that’s needed to run a successful business. Not quite so. Consumers today are very hungry for information and want to know more about your business. Therefore providing pillar content relating to your products or services can add value for your consumers and generate more sales for you. For example, if I were selling a watch online and it had a description and listed features, it may not be enough for a consumer to purchase the watch from my site. Reason being, most people would want to read reviews from others who have purchased this watch and see their feedback. What if I wrote an article about the watch talking about the history and make of it and asked an expert to state their opinion, and had other consumers respond with comments and feedback. Then this would provide social proof and adds value to your product without the consumer leaving your site and spending time looking for more information elsewhere. Examples Of Pillar Content Most pillar content articles are longer than 500 words and have lots of practical tips or advice. There are many different forms of pillar content you can create and I have listed some examples below for you to apply to your industry: 1. How To Article - shows people how to do a certain task or instructions on building something 2. Definition Article - defines a term in your industry 3. Present A Theory Or Argument - writing to present some unique thought 4. Release A Significant Resource - a report, podcast, video 5. A “List” Article - it’s very easy to scan and share. Can be a top 10 list or action points 6. Technical Or Visual Guide - a screen capture presentation or how to fix something using a video presentation. It is also a very detailed step by step blueprint on exactly how to complete a task. Pillars I’ve seen how effective pillar content can be for any Internet business and I recommend you have at least 10 pillar articles on your website before marketing to consumers. That way you’ll provide them with something valuable to read and also gain their interest to come back again. If you can write an article each day using the above examples, then you can build a very strong foundation for your Internet business. Tyrone Shum Pillar Article Writer
