Superior self-knowledge is the main strength of the progressive business leader. This is so because the progressive business leader continuously examines his past actions to see if there are ways of improving on them for present or future requirements. By continuously examining himself and his actions he never stops increasing his knowledge of himself. The progressive business leader understands this superior strength of his, and he has the wisdom and the discipline to maintain it by continuously reviewing how he is doing. He knows instinctively that in anything, the superior level is lost as soon as one stops making a conscious effort to maintain it. He also understands the other side of the coin, as it were, which is that in the end it is a high quality of self-knowledge that allows one to make the progress one is aiming for. The progressive leader with superior self-knowledge realizes that the theories, methods and techniques of good leadership and good management are meaningless without the foundation of a superior level of self-knowledge. The most successful progressive leaders are not typically participants in leadership and management training workshops and seminars, they are the leaders and facilitators of such events. As they facilitate, they underscore the need for a high level of personal qualities a leader needs to have, such as being honest with oneself and mature in one’s outlook. These things one cannot learn at a workshop because ‘you either have them or you don’t’. Such is the underlying thinking of the progressive leader.
