Doing Business With Extra Speed
My triathlon coach, ‘Fox’ has sold
me on this idea for a long time. We can get extra speed from observing a few
key points during a race. This ‘extra’ during the Transition period can
translate into a podium placing, and a sense of achievement.
Transitions – the brief break
between the swim and ride, or ride and run – can save us time if we eliminate
wasteful actions.
For instance, by using elastic
laces, we can simply slip on our socks and shoes with ease and be out on the
running route within a minute. If we tie our laces, it may require more time to
add that second knot (as security). When you hook on your cycling shoes on the
pedals, you need merely to push your bike faster to the mounting-line, and
beyond, and do a trained ‘flying mount’. This will ensure little loss in
momentum and reduce ‘down-time’ due to delays and hesitation.
If we lean forward in your running
posture, and increase your cadence, you can run faster. If we pace ourselves correctly,
we can run faster without suffering the imminent ‘fatigue’ that high intensity
competition presents.
Today, business occurs at the
speed of thought (with a nod towards Bill Gates’s book). As quickly as ideas
pop up, sometimes with increasing ferocity, we need to act quickly on some of
them. Ideas, unprocessed and unattended, can lead to disappointment and
disenchantment when somebody succeeds before we do with them. It is important
to lead with our minds and methods.
Both effectiveness and efficiency
matter in business; faster and better is now the norm. How do you make the
shift from one business deal to another? Do you include time wasters in your
business dealings? How do you act when you make transactions? Sometimes, slow
is fast. Other times fast can be faster.

do you speed things up when boredom sets in? How do you expedite matters of
importance? How do you accelerate a process without compromising safety,
sensibility or sensitivity?
