Walking Your Talk & Running Away With Your Ideas

‘Be the change that you wish to see in the world.’ - Mahatma Gandhi

Eric Clapton sang the definitive song ‘Change The World’. It is about making way for your dreams and aspirations. The Buddha taught: ‘Do good. Be good.’

If we want to experience something, we will have to initiate it. We need to start off with something others can see, hear and feel. Things have to make sense, or they sound like nonsense. People will need to be convinced before they decide to emulate the new behaviors. They seek meaning, their raison d’être. Without meaning, there will be no relevance or reason to change. Change must present benefits, or it will be met with indifference, doubt and stasis. Your first steps will determine the likelihood of you starting your new business completing your marathon, building your new team, and achieving your goals, targets and dreams.

To promote peace, we have to be peaceful. To promote health, be healthy. To enhance quality, raise our personal and professional standards. We are likely to be more effective when we lead with our intentions and commitment. Lead and follow with actions.

Some may consider these approaches as applying our values. Certainly, your personal values and company core values must matter. How do you demonstrate these values through your business dealings with your customers? Howard Schulz wrote his book, ‘Pour Your Heart Into Every Cup’. I believe that he summed it up succinctly this notion of being true to yourself and being true to others. You can pour your passion, integrity, admiration and care into your business.

Demonstrate through your actions. Be the change you want to see. Go out – and do it!

Reworking an idea versus stealing prose Reworking an idea versus stealing prose - It's always been a truism that one can't steal ideas. Ideas are just there, for anyone to take and run with. For example, I believe Dan Brown was recently sued because his DaVinci Code apparently took a lot of information from a non-fiction book about Jesus Christ and the last supper, postulating that Mary had been married, and the writers of that book said he'd stolen their idea. Well... he'd used their idea but he'd come up with the plot that went around it, not to mention all the words, so it was an "original" idea and they lost their suit. On the other hand I think Harlan Ellison won a suit over Schwarzenegger's The Running Man, because it was too close to one of his stories...

Ideas on Using Twitter for Business Ideas on Using Twitter for Business - 1. Build an account and immediate start using Twitter Search to listen for your name, your competitor's names, words that relate to your space. (Listening always comes first.) 2. Add a picture. ( Shel reminds us of this.) We want to see you. 3. Talk to people about THEIR interests, too. I know this doesn't sell more widgets, but it shows us you are human. 4. Point out interesting things in your space, not just about you. 5. Share links to neat things in your community. ( wholefoods does this well). 6. Don't get stuck in the apology loop. Be helpful instead. ( jetblue gives travel tips.) 7. Be wary of always pimping your stuff. Your fans will love it. Others will tune out. 8. Promote your employees outside-of-work stories.
