What a great question. It is rare that I read something like this and it inspires me to say the least. No doubt, this situation did not occur without much work and intervention (when necessary). The first piece of advice I would give to anyone in this situation is to acknowledge those within the team often and detail exactly what you mean by the statement. Too often, we look for problems and only focus on that. It is as though we are too scared to talk about what is going well in case we mess it up.
All organizations have to continue to evaluate and implement effective systems and processes and if you are the new kid in the group take time out with the team to find out why it is working well. Do they realize it? What did the previous leader do to achieve it? Speak to them at length if you can. I would also suggest that you take it easy in order to fit in with the already established culture. Most of us do not like change and there will be ripples felt by all as a new leader takes over. Take time to find out what style your new people like to work with. Some employees like to be micro managed while others just want to be allowed to get on with it.
Are there annual performance appraisals conducted? If so have a close look at them and if not implement them as soon as you can. This will give you a base to work from and when leaders use them as a working document it assists employee and leader to know exactly what has to be done to achieve business goals.
