The importance of self esteem

| Guest post by: Merydith Willoughby |
Article Overview: Having a good self esteem depends on many factors. Everyone is different; each person will need to identify what self esteem means to them and what they want in life and in their career. We are often fooled by the adolescent rose coloured glasses and many (regardless of age), think that they will live happily ever after. Not surprisingly those who subscribe to this myth are often sadly disappointed and spend a lot of time wondering what happened – why didn’t they get what they want and thought they deserved.

The importance of self esteem
The level of self esteem we have underpins all decisions made and there is no doubt it will have a huge impact on our career choice. The term is laughed at by many and thought to be one of those ‘soft skills’ that are not that important and it is rarely given the credence it deserves. It is my belief that we need to invest significant time and effort into understanding what self esteem is, develop it and maintain it. It is not a once off thing – once achieved, always there – it has to be worked on throughout our whole life. Sometimes it seems easy and other times it appears to be elusive.
Having a good self esteem depends on many factors.
Furthermore, it surprises me that in a ‘knowledge economy’ many people don't seek assistance for their self esteem issues because they feel shame and think it is just them who struggle because the surface view of everyone else indicates that they are indeed living their Fantastic Life . When we stop this and become honest with our self, it frees up anxiety and we can learn to focus on moving forward and to systematically achieve our goals. To assist people to do this I wrote If it’s to be: It’s up to me which assists people to think in project terms and teaches them how not to get caught up in their emotions.
• Useful tips
• Be clear about what you would like to do in your career and start to work to achieve it.
• Have the courage to change if you do not find that your choice was correct.
• Think big – start small and build on it.
• Don’t get caught in the trap that most people do whereby they go to work to earn a living and quite often hate their job.
• Know that the magic fairy won’t give you a fantastic career or wonderful life – you have to put the hard work into it and keep refining it until you are where you want to be (this is ongoing).
• Know that every decision you make is underpinned by your self esteem.
