MEMBER INITIATIVE:
Amundsen, the great norwegian explorer, required great initiative from his men. He knew that under stress, passivity turns into apathy. People showing constant activity avoid this apathy. A concern was expressed by our base camp manager, and the cook that their roles included much passivity. Hence they carried loads and were included in activities wherever and as high as they could get.Our two doctors were interchanged periodically between base camp and a high camp, determining their movements by mutual consent. This ensured they played a vital part. Being stuck in base camp for anyone with an adventurous spirit would have been a prison sentence in the wilds of the high Tibetan plateau.
Amundsen believed that doctors create sickness by their very presence and because they are almost priest like they can divide command so their initiative has to be tempered. Luckily ours were kept working hard physically and medically. Machiavelli said "Choose your own disciples." It worked for me. I picked 12 people I knew were radically motivated.
Our scenario on Everest :
3 guys were 2000 ft from the top in bad snow and weather conditions.I could have ordered them down for safety reasons but I did not. I said the decision was up to them. They were on the spot. They knew the score. The jet stream winds dropped early creating terrible minus 4o degree temperatures and hurricane winds. They turned back, had an epic retreat but lived to tell the tale.
