LEADERSHIP: STRENGTH IS LIVING AND WEAKNESS IS DYING.

“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” Rosalynn Carter

It is said that a leader should always keep evolving to be an effective leader. Leaders are not born- they become leaders by making mistakes and learning from them and thus evolving in life with every such experience.

Such experiences also teach a leader to accept the fact that every human being evolves in life with a certain set of strengths and weaknesses. Any individual is the product of his circumstances starting from where he was born, how he was treated by his parents, the quality of schooling he got, the kind friends he had while growing up in his formative years etc.

Hence when a person joins the leader as a member of his team as an employee, he comes with certain strengths and weaknesses which may be inherent due to his upbringing. The leader just does not have an option to choose a person with set of only strengths(and no weaknesses) needed for his team and the organization because such a person does not exist.

A leader, who starts dealing with that employee with this understanding, will always be more realistic in his approach while dealing him. His leadership role demands that he should get the best out of that person for the good of his team and the organization.

This obvious necessity will initially necessitate him to focus on the strength of the employee and make best use of his qualities rather than concentrating on his weaknesses and keep on lamenting and reminding the employee about them. If he treats the employee like this, he will de-motivate him and a de-motivated person may not be successful in giving his best to the organization. This surely will be failure of the leader more than the failure of the employee.

Once a leader understands this basic tenant of his Leadership role, he is bound to take a more constructive approach by focusing on the employee’s strength and disregarding his weaknesses at least initially. Subsequently, once the comfort level is established in the relationship between the leader and the employee, the leader may gradually discuss employee’s weaknesses which have a negative impact on his work performance, without giving an impression of criticizing him.

This will surely ensure healthy inter-personnel relationship between the leader and the employee in the long run. Having established such relationship, the leader can easily guide the employee to set his goals in consonance with the goal of the organization.

This approach will ensure that the employee is an asset to the organization and may even exceed the organizational goals. He may chart the path which he wants to but also the path which he ought to, in terms of the vision of the organization.

This surely will be illustration of trait of a great leader!!
