Leadership is “Net Time” and “Net Results” not “Gross Time”

Guest post by: Dr Shailesh Thaker

Article Overview: Leaders always forget the other issues apart from their professional life such as family, friends, relatives, health and other major life activities. Leaders need to learn the importance of these things in their life. Once these things are shattered, you will never get them back. So, enjoy your life with your family and friends while concentrating on net time rather than gross time.

Leadership is “Net Time” and “Net Results” not “Gross Time”

Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the

air. You name them - Work, Family, Health, Friends and Spirit. You're

keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball.

If you drop it, it will bounce back.

But, the other four Balls - Family, Health, Friends and Spirit - are made of

Glass. If you drop one of these; they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked,

nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must

understand that and strive for it.

“Work efficiently during office hours and leave on time. Give the required

time to your family, friends & have proper rest.” Asserted Bryan Dyson (CEO of Coca Cola).

Balancing multi roles is an art. Most of the Top Level leaders, I had found, failed in balancing multi roles. President Bill Clinton found very poor in health and family role performance. Atul Bihari Bajpayee (Former prime-minster of India) found very poor in physical leadership and home leadership. Even scientist APJ Kalam have not played family role.

I came across examples in Japan, most of the executives and managers go to massage centre from the work place and then go to home.

My personal observation is woman is far better in performing multi roles. I had seen many working women, in these multi roles and had found them better than then men.

“Net Time” is most appealing factor in performing multi roles. People are found in “Gross Time” arena. Lot of professional go home and remove their shoes, switch on T.V., read magazine, dial mobile and start taking dinner. (I appreciate handling multi activity skill) but at the cost of family role. I had seen disgruntle (complaining loudly) woman in the house. What did I get as a professional?

Books that should be written Books that should be written - [quote:1m0dcpd7]"The Idiots Guide To Sticking With One Thing At A Time and Not Doing Something New All The Time" [/quote:1m0dcpd7] I myself am a 'constructive' procrastinator... I don't know if I'm alone in this. I have about six or seven projects I'm working on at any given time. I get one project almost done... then my interest is piqued by another project and I work on that... I get burnt out and move to another...I know I do this so I have it arranged such that once I get bored or burnt out with one project, I can step right back into project 1 - or 2 or 3, and get that a little bit more done before moving on to something else. As long as you're organized and know where all your reference material/idea sheets are when you're ready to get back to work on each project, it should be fine. I also find that by stepping away from a project - I still work on it in the recesses of my mind so that when I go back to it - it's with some good ideas that I wouldn't have had if I'd continued on with it originally. Maybe I should write a book on how to Procrastinate Constructively... I've actually thought about doing that...because most people procrastinate, don't they...and very few are ever able to stop.
