MIND TRAP: Ignoring the Evidence

Guest post by: Steve Major

Article Overview: Steve Major discusses the fifth and final mind trap out that we can fall into in making decisions - ignoring the evidence. This is where we are not facing the facts. The facts are there, but we are not facing them. You could say we are avoiding the facts. It's a form of denial.

MIND TRAP: Ignoring the Evidence

There are five mind traps that I feel we can fall into in making decisions:

1. Following Fads and Fashion

2. When we don't question assumptions

3. Perspective

4. Heuristic Thinking

5. Ignoring the Evidence.

It does not matter whether it's the decision to launch a new product, to change an existing product or service, or whether it's some other decision that we are faced with in our business. It might be a decision personal or career decision - there are traps that we can fall into that can kill smart decisions.

The mind trap involved in making smart decisions, that I wish to focus in this article, is ignoring the evidence. This is where we are not facing the facts. The facts are there, but we are not facing them. You could say we are avoiding the facts. It's a form of denial.

Henry Ford, to use a long ago example, had the facts in front of him that consumers were wanting a colour other than black. The customers were demanding more customisation. The evidence was clear. Report after report had been put to him by his management. He denied the facts. As a result, General Motors was able to capitalise on this and overtake Ford in market leadership, just through an unwillingness to face the facts. Ford never reclaimed the market dominance they had.

So to use the clothing example from the "Following Fads and Fashion" article one more time:

We try on something and it looks good at the time. We get home and we look in the mirror again and we go "Oh, what the heck were we thinking?" We need to be willing to confront the information that is in front of us and do something about it. Don't be in a state of denial.

Watch out for the mind trap of denial. It's a killer of smart decisions.
