MIND TRAP: Perspective

Guest post by: Steve Major

Article Overview: There are traps we can fall into that can kill smart decisions. In this article Steve Major focuses on the third mind trap that we can fall into - perspective. It's where we ignore the whole picture. We automatically assume that what we have done in the past that seemed to be effective will continue to be effective into the future.

MIND TRAP: Perspective

There are five mind traps that I feel we fall into in making decisions:

1. Following Fads and Fashion

2. When we don't question assumptions

3. Perspective

4. Heuristic Thinking

5. Ignoring the Evidence.

This doesn't matter whether it's the decision to launch a new product, change an existing product or service, or whether it's some other decision we are faced with in our business. Maybe it is a decision personal or career decision.

The mind-trap that I wish to focus on in this article is perspective. It's where we ignore the whole picture.

We automatically assume that what we have done in the past that seemed to be effective will continue to be effective into the future. This is particularly relevant where you see a person who's been in one type of business or firm and then they move to a new organisation. Then they automatically try to implement the things that came out of the past business because they worked there. It's this perceived previous success. But firstly we need to understand why it worked previously. It may be that there were certain things that happened last time that were different to the current situation. You must know the connection between the decision and the outcome. What was the true cause of the outcome that you are trying to replicate.

We need to be conscious of the whole picture. We need to be conscious that the things that we have done in the past don't automatically work into the future. Just because some plan of attack, staff management, some human resources, product decision, customer decisions worked in the past does not mean that they will continue to work into the future.

To use the clothing example from the "Following Fads and Fashion" article, just because you have always shopped at that store, or maybe those who are used to shopping for designer labels - just because you've bought from that place or designer before does not mean that into the future it will always be the best decision.

We need to be careful to understand the connection of why did it really work in the past and why it will work now.

Beware of a lack of perspective. It's a killer to smart decisions.
