If you are not one of the early adopters of Google+ and are sitting on the sidelines, as I was, wondering if this is going to be yet another time sink, Guy Kawasaki's What the Plus! Google+ for the Rest of Us [Kindle Edition] will remove any uncertainties from its very first pages.
The book starts with a concise explanation of how Google+, Facebook and Twitter compare and provides a simple way to decide on whether or not you need Google+. It will lift the fog on what Facebook is for, what Twitter is for and what Google+ is for.
If you decide Google+ is for you (and I suspect most people will, if not now, at some point,) Guy Kawasaki will then take you by the hand and walk you through how to get started. He will explain a lot of the terminology so that you can feel right at home and save countless hours trying to figure out what everything means.
You will find out about things like "Compiled Shared Circles" (thematic shared circles that allow you to benefit from others' research in a field that might be of interest to you.)
You learn how to master circles and streams, the do's and don'ts and some important information for privacy/security.
You'll know how to increase the quality of your stream with "what's hot" and "hash tag" features.
One section of the book I particularly liked is "How to Make an Enchanting Profile" which is so crucial for that first impression where people make snap judgments on whether they should pay attention to your postings (e.g. your tagline, you avatar, your scrapbook.) I now know I have to do a major rewrite of my profile!
There is also sound advice on being trustworthy and a good citizen of the online community. So many other useful sections: how to comment, share posts, where to cherry pick interesting stuff to post, how to optimize for social search, how to attract more followers, what hangouts are, (if you are promoting something, you ought to check this feature.)
Another interesting and useful section is what to do if you are followed by Schmexperts, Bigots, Idiots (people who share spam) etc.
If you are a woman concerned about being circled by strangers, you should read Lynette Young's excellent essay on Chapter 11+. (The + is not a typo - there are two chapter 11.) Lynette is the creator and curator of Women of Google+.
From the book, I also made a note of Google+ shortcuts.
You'll also discover how to optimize your posts for search engines, how to cross-post and how to use Google+ from mobile devices.
The book is clearly laid-out, easy to read, with beautiful color photos and screen shots to help you see what Kawasaki is explaining. This is a timely book and well worth reading.
