13 key reasons why most change programs fail

The main focus of my business for 20 years has been partnering with passionate people to stop the status quo from sucking the life out of us and to turn possibility into reality.

I conclude that most change programs fail for 13 key reasons:

1. The people charged with making the change happen don’t really believe in it and therefore their work is half-hearted at best

2. The change program is designed to take too long and the status quo wins

3. The expectations are unrealistic

4. People are not genuinely appreciated when they do well

5. People are not held to account when they fail to perform as they agreed they would

6. Measurements of progress are poor or non-existent

7. Desired change is actually problem solving which usually means a return to the status quo rather than real innovation

8. Intentions, emotions, and thinking doesn’t change and therefore any behaviour change that may happen doesn’t last

9. There isn’t a real shared-view about why the change is crucial/essential

10. There isn’t a real shared-view on how the change will happen and who will do what, and when

11. Leaders don’t understand all change is personal first, relationships second, and organisations third

12. Leaders don’t personally change

13. Broken relationships remain broken

The presence of any of the above reasons will most likely mean your change initiative will see you go backwards.

There is great news. Address these 13, and pioneering, breathtaking, truly innovative, measurable change, people can actually believe in and make happen, is at your doorstep.

Since 1991 I have partnered with passionate and enlightened leaders in changing what's normal for the good of yourself, other people, our planet, and for profit.

My specialisations are:
  • Change people can actually believe in and make happen
  • Change where everyone can win (the technical term is creating shared value or CSV) a business growth strategy referred to in a recent Harvard Business Review article by Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer as The Big Idea.
My fourth book changing what's normal contains 58 sparkenations.

A sparkenation is a word I created to denote: a spark that ignites passion that leads to action that changes what’s normal.

You can check out my books outline, download 3 sparkenations with my compliments, or purchase here.

Re: Murphy's Law on Website Promotion Re: Murphy's Law on Website Promotion - Hi GT, Murphy is my best friend and he follows me around all th time. The same thing happened to me a few month ago, but the hosting company is so good, they have few servers, and their support system is the best. Another example is the program you choose to promote. I promote several PPL programs and one weekend was working hard on adding a page to my site with a couple of programs, a week after, the company removed them, meaning I had o change all the links on this page. But it also teaches you a lesson, I learned, that all links I use are being redirected, this way I only change the link once, if you love to use some images, save them an upload them to your server, this way you will never lose them, and if you can and know how, you php files and not html.
hiring an employee hiring an employee - You may want to consider contracting out instead of actually hiring. Some factors to think about if you hire someone as an employee and you put them on payroll you will be required to pay CPP and EI, as well as deducting CPP, EI and Taxes from their paycheck and remitting them to Revenue Canada. So you will need to 1. Register with Revenue Canada so you can make the remittenances 2. make sure you keep really good track of these deductions 3. it you don't have the time to do payroll you may need to hire a bookkeeper. or you could contract out the hours that you would need an assistant. The would be able to work from their space or your office. There is another option that you might want to consider some of the community centers offers training programs for new immigrants or anyone wish to change professions some of these programs require that they offer their services for 6 or 8 weeks (no charge to the employer). If you need someone short term this may help you and provide extra training for someone else. Microskills is one of the Community Centers that offer such programs. they train customer service personal, bookkeepers.
Re: Who hates cold calling? Re: Who hates cold calling? - Hi Gerry, This is excellent advice for anyone who needs to cold call. I think that one of the main reasons people fail with cold calling is that they fear it and that comes through when they approach people even over the phone. By knowing something about the people beforehand a lot of that fear will be alleviated. MichelleJ
Re: Ten Brands to disappear in 2012 Re: Ten Brands to disappear in 2012 - That makes perfect sense GT, the one certainty in life is that things will keep changing and if you or your company fail to change as well, you will get left behind. Especially in todays' fast moving world. Being in South Africa I am not really qualified to talk about the American or Canadian companies so cannot comment on these in particular. MichelleJ
Re: Twitter vs Facebook Re: Twitter vs Facebook - [quote="barrysarner":2iatbyr4]Hi Trent, Thank you. How many followers do you have? Do you find the number of followers changes day to day? Why do people follow you ? (not being a wiseguy just trying to learn) appreciate the help[/quote:2iatbyr4] I have two accounts and both of them have a little over 1500 followers each. The number of followers does change day to day but it's never a significant change. Some days you get more followers and some days you lose some. I don't know why people follow me or stop following me. I assume it's for a number of different reasons.
