Can you describe the strategy for your business growth in 6 words?

Guest post by: Ian Berry

Article Overview: Most strategies fail to get executed because the folk charged with execution don't understand the strategy or it has not been personalised sufficiently for them to take appropriate action. Being able to describe our strategy succinctly increases the likelihood of buy-in and personalisation.

Can you describe the strategy for your business growth in 6 words?

The great writer Ernest Hemingway apparently believed the following to be six of his most powerful words: For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn.

My friend and colleague Kwai Yu, Founder of Leaders Cafe 2020 used these words to start a discussion in the Leaders Cafe group on LinkedIn he called Who are you? Could you tell the 'story of you' in six words?

I was fascinated by the replies and then had an ahha moment - could strategy be described in six words? And could doing so increase people's awareness of what the strategy is, and therefore increase the likelihood of execution?

I have since helped several clients to really sharpen their strategy and increase the likelihood of execution by narrowing strategy down to six words including my own as follows:

Challenges, Causes, Channels, Conversations, Core, Community.

My strategy for business growth is to always ensure that I am up to date with the challenges and the underlying causes of such challenges of my clients and prospective clients which focuses my research and the designing, writing, recording, filming, and capturing solutions which I upload to various digital channels such as this article, blogs, my website, my monthly ezine etc etc.

I then follow-up people on my lists and have conversations about the effectiveness of my solutions. A percentage of these conversations turn into core business which for me is presentations, programs, projects, and personal mentoring that inspire individuals and organsiations to step-up your achievements for the good of yourself, other people, our planet, and where appropriate for profit.

Many of the conversations I have and the core business I undertake lead to various forms of community and the creation of communities that make an authentic difference, which is the primary reason I do what I do.

Be the difference you want to see in the world

Since 1991 I have partnered with passionate and enlightened leaders in changing what's normal for the good of yourself, other people, our planet, and for profit.

My specialisations are:
  • Change people can actually believe in and make happen
  • Change where everyone can win (the technical term is creating shared value or CSV) a business growth strategy referred to in a recent Harvard Business Review article by Michael E. Porter and Mark R. Kramer as The Big Idea.
My fourth book changing what's normal contains 58 sparkenations.

A sparkenation is a word I created to denote: a spark that ignites passion that leads to action that changes what’s normal.

You can check out my books outline, download 3 sparkenations with my compliments, or purchase here.

"One word" for Internet Marketing "One word" for Internet Marketing - I have a question for those who are students and experts on Internet marketing. Let me put forward the question. I developed a tool to give me focus and my understanding of things. What I do is attach one word to a general topic that would describe and keep me in line with my belief. For instance, on the subject of merchandising, I attach the word, limitation. On the subject of strategy as it pertains to my own philosophy, I attach the word simplicity. If one word could be used to peg the right direction in Internet marketing today, what would that word be? I'm not looking for fluffy words like perseverance or motivational jargon. Any help on this?
Re: Mobile Marketing Re: Mobile Marketing - Indeed mobile marketing is one of the high rollers in the online marketing business. Nevertheless if we want growth for our business an application of this strategy is advantageous.
Strategy People Strategy People - Greetings all! Recently I have come to the understanding that I am severely lacking strategy. I have many, many tactics on how to make money with my business but without a strategy to implement those tactics I'm spinning my wheels. Has anyone found someone who is a great strategist for their business? There are lots of 'readable' resources around but like more entrepreneurs, I'm too busy thinking of ways to make money for my business rather than learning strategy. So, for me the best thing is to find someone who can help guide my business in strategic planning. Someone who can supplement my strengths with their own. As an extra question, is this a common trait amung entrepreneurs? How many here are good at strategy? If you learned to be good, how did you learn?
Growing ... or not Growing ... or not - I've seen this done successful and I've seen disastrous results. From the expansions I've seen, a lot depends on the business owner and/or manager. Some people can run a business if it stays on an even keel, but many are simply not qualified to handle a business "explosion". Its wonderful to have the opportunity to grow your business in a hurry, but if the people or person in charge can't handle the growth, it can be really ugly and can cause huge problems within the business. Having the right people in place to deal with the growth is a key to making it work for you and not against you. Shri
Growth? Growth? - when we say "Grow" are we talking about growth in scale or growth in their bottom line. I feel when business owners talk about money their main concern is to have their current customer buy in more frequency and thus improving their bottom line i.e through referrals, joint-ventures etc. growth in scale can be scary due to the amount of risk and effort required to undertake it. Not to mention the owners also being concerned about being in more than one place at once as they haven't in most cases systematized their businesses.
