Want to increase sales? productivity? focus? Stop cluttering your mind with useless information. Einstein, was right all along, take these simple tips and apply them today!

Quite a fewyears ago, I came across this quote from Albert Einstein. I believe the story is, a colleague asked him for his phone number, and Einstein reached for his telephone directory to look it up.

“You don’t remember your own number?” the man asked, startled.

“No,” Einstein answered. “Why should I memorize something I can so easily get from a book?”

He supported the theory that we should not clutter our brains. Of course coming from someone who spent his life trying to scientifically explain the secrets of the world, this makes perfect sense. Why in the world would he want to take up brain power with meaningless clutter.

I started to apply this concept as often as possible. The practice of writing things down, typing things up, and keeping a record of information. Eventually things like access codes automatically become a part of memory, but they are not taking up too much space.

After years of following and practicing Einstein’s idea. I now come across this concept as a first step in the process of getting organized and gaining clarity. David Allen, author of “Getting Things Done” , clearly indicates that you need to spend time collecting and gathering everything that is on your mind, so you can begin to decide the potential of each. He also advocates the “best practice” of keeping everything out of your head.

If you want to get more out of your day, increase clarity and productivity you need to create positive habits that support these “best practices” such as keeping everything out of your head.

So if Step 1:Is keep everything out of your head:“Never memorize something that you can look up.” – Einstein. Purge regularly, get everything on paper.

Step 2: Is Committo ONE and only one action that you can schedule in repeatedly into your calender, that supports this behaviour.

Example:

Every Friday: Write down everything that is on your mind, to dos reminders, etc.

WARNING: You need to SCHEDULE these things into your calender and committo the action.

The reason we fail to create sustainability is because we have not created a habit, and we need structure to support the growth of a habit. Without the structure, and without habit you will inevitably fall back into old patterns of behaviour.

If we find ourselves with a habit of being in a reactive state, we are challenged with the fact that our brains are in some way being rewarded by the chaos and disorganization. We must change our habits, and behaviours and understand that focus takes practice, and practice makes habit.

Commit, keep things simple, and create positive habits. One by one create the habits you need to help support clarity, productivity and happiness.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle

How do you commit? You must make up your mind, you must quit cold turkey and vow to yourself that you will start with one habit, and never go back. It is going to be difficult because your brain is craving the reactive stimulated state. Start with ONE behaviour change with a STRUCTURE.

Word of caution:You need to get brutally honest with yourself about commiting to one action, if you cannot, then you need to dig deeper to understand why not. After all what do you have to lose? you only have something to gain. Everything else is an excuse.

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. ~Albert Einstein

Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips Re: 7 Top Blog Design Tips - Hi Tyrone, Great tips! I think these tips can be applied to any web page, as the same rules will apply to them as well. As webmasters we should always be trying to improve or enhance the look of our sites/blogs and make sure that we are attracting and keeping as many visitors as possible. The best thing I think you mentioned was about creating an "About Me" page and posting a picture of yourself. People like to know that there's a real person behind the site. It makes them feel more comfortable and allows them to trust you more. David, thanks for posting about Bravenet.com. I haven't heard of them, but I had used a simple script at one time to do the same thing.

Re: How To Pick Keywords To Rank For Re: How To Pick Keywords To Rank For - Hi GT, Sure thing. I agree, there's a lot of information out there on SEO, and not all of it will apply to everyone depending on what they're doing. But, the basics do apply to everyone and are easy to implement once they know what they are. Anyone can learn it if they take the time. That's a great quote, BTW.
Re: What About Flash Then? Re: What About Flash Then? - [quote="mphcoach":2l7dcz2u]though I guess that it gets a bit mundane after the novelty wears off.[/quote:2l7dcz2u] Hi Martin, We also have to keep in mind the average time people spend on new websites they visit. It's probably in seconds, so if this talking avatar can't get his message or sales pitch across in that short period, then the video is useless. Most users will just get impatient and continue surfing elsewhere like I did.
Re: Hello from Australia Re: Hello from Australia - Hi GT, Thanks for your reply and interest. That book is certainly one of the top on my list of favourites - such old age lessons that still apply today as ever. The next step with the business is to leverage my abilities and skills to output more work from the businesses. Before I go out and hire people blindly - i'm working on the systems to create a bit of order and consistency that clients can rely on. So this is the focus on this year. All the best,
