Want to increase sales? productivity? focus? Stop cluttering your mind with useless information. Einstein, was right all along, take these simple tips and apply them today!
Quite a fewyears ago, I came across this quote from Albert Einstein. I believe the story is, a colleague asked him for his phone number, and Einstein reached for his telephone directory to look it up.
“You don’t remember your own number?” the man asked, startled.
“No,” Einstein answered. “Why should I memorize something I can so easily get from a book?”
He supported the theory that we should not clutter our brains. Of course coming from someone who spent his life trying to scientifically explain the secrets of the world, this makes perfect sense. Why in the world would he want to take up brain power with meaningless clutter.
I started to apply this concept as often as possible. The practice of writing things down, typing things up, and keeping a record of information. Eventually things like access codes automatically become a part of memory, but they are not taking up too much space.
After years of following and practicing Einstein’s idea. I now come across this concept as a first step in the process of getting organized and gaining clarity. David Allen, author of “Getting Things Done” , clearly indicates that you need to spend time collecting and gathering everything that is on your mind, so you can begin to decide the potential of each. He also advocates the “best practice” of keeping everything out of your head.
If you want to get more out of your day, increase clarity and productivity you need to create positive habits that support these “best practices” such as keeping everything out of your head.
So if Step 1:Is keep everything out of your head:“Never memorize something that you can look up.” – Einstein. Purge regularly, get everything on paper.
Step 2: Is Committo ONE and only one action that you can schedule in repeatedly into your calender, that supports this behaviour.
Example:
Every Friday: Write down everything that is on your mind, to dos reminders, etc.
WARNING: You need to SCHEDULE these things into your calender and committo the action.
The reason we fail to create sustainability is because we have not created a habit, and we need structure to support the growth of a habit. Without the structure, and without habit you will inevitably fall back into old patterns of behaviour.
If we find ourselves with a habit of being in a reactive state, we are challenged with the fact that our brains are in some way being rewarded by the chaos and disorganization. We must change our habits, and behaviours and understand that focus takes practice, and practice makes habit.
Commit, keep things simple, and create positive habits. One by one create the habits you need to help support clarity, productivity and happiness.
“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act but a habit.” – Aristotle
How do you commit? You must make up your mind, you must quit cold turkey and vow to yourself that you will start with one habit, and never go back. It is going to be difficult because your brain is craving the reactive stimulated state. Start with ONE behaviour change with a STRUCTURE.
Word of caution:You need to get brutally honest with yourself about commiting to one action, if you cannot, then you need to dig deeper to understand why not. After all what do you have to lose? you only have something to gain. Everything else is an excuse.
Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler. ~Albert Einstein
