What can the movie- Due Date, with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, teach you about your leadership style?
|
| Guest post by: Jennifer Nuce |
Article Overview: Leadership comes in all different styles. This article explores the contrast between the iron fist and the wet noodle approach. By comparing the very different characters in the movie Due Date, we can see how their extreme differences would give them the chance to learn from each other, translate this into leadership styles and we can do the same. More importantly, we can learn about our own style and how we can improve. Mix in a little comic relief, and we will all soon be laughing at ourselves, or not. Enjoy.

What can the movie- Due Date, with Robert Downey Jr. and Zach Galifianakis, teach you about your leadership style?
Due Datewas written by screenwriters Alan R. Cohen, Alan Freedland, Adam Sztykiel, and Todd Phillips.
If you haven’t seen the movie yet, here is a quick summary.
Two men, one uptight, well dressed, perfectionistprofessional, RDJ (Peter). One, sloppy, lonely, beardy, crazy guy, actor, meet at the airport, ZG (Ethan).
Peter Highman (Robert Downey Jr.) must get to LA in five days to be at the birth of his firstborn. He is about to fly home from Atlanta when his luggage and wallet are sent to LA without him, and he is put on the “no-fly” list. Desperate to get home Peter is forced to accept the offer of Ethan Tremblay (Zach Galifianakis) to hitch a ride with him cross-country. Peter is about to go on the most terrifying and agonizing journey of his life. Written bydouglas the movie guy.
Enroute from Atlanta to Los Angeles via plane to be on time for the birth of his first child, Peter Highman instead runs into fellow-passenger/aspiring Hollywood actor, Ethan Tremblay, and has part of his baggage switched. Just when the flight is about to take off, Peter gets into a situation, is shot and subdued by an Air Marshall. When he regains his senses he finds he is on the ‘No Fly List’, no money/credit card, nor identification, and is compelled to hitch a ride with Ethan. Hoping to make it in time, he is has no idea that soon he will be assaulted by a ‘handicapable’ Western Union employee; get in a serious accident that will result in a fracture and several stitches; be on the run from Mexican Police; suspect his wife of having an affair with his friend, Darryl, and that the child may not even be his!!Written byrajou at hotmail.com
Ethan essentially trashes Peter in to submission. Peter has an anger management issue, is a major control freak and
probably likes to iron is socks. Ethan’s sloppy and careless attitude lands them both into dangerously insane situations.
The contrast between the two characters is most interesting. On one hand you have a very organized individual who
wants to control everything, on the other, an individual who would rather look the other way, refusing to deal with
reality.
So how does this relate to your leadership style?
Leaders who rule by the iron fist, refuse to relinquish control, withhold information, and animately disregard
the importance of appreciation, are considered to be toxic. These qualities guarantee people will be resentful
in the workplace, decreasing productivity and ensuring there will be no future leaders to take their place.
Succession plan, what succession plan?
Leaders who rule with complacency, look the other way, refuse to be pro-active, and would
rather keep things steady than rock the boat, foster a culture of people who may like them
as an individual, but have very little respect for them as a leader. In addition, their lack of
engagement equates to a nervous culture, who never really know what is expected of them
or where they stand. Employees know that this leader will put up with just about anything,
So, before you start justifying, denying, and looking the other way. Take a moment
to think about your leadership style? It might not be this black and white, but you
may notice some similar behaviours in yourself.
Word of caution:"You better check yourself, before you wreck yourself" E. Tremblay-
Now for some much needed work comic relief….

Re: Do Articles For Businesswomen need to be written differently
- One of the best books ever written to illustrate this point beautifully, half the book is written in a story style and then the same thing is written again in more of a text book style.
The book is The One Minute Millionaire by Mark Victor Hansen and Robert G. Allen.
Quite different and I am sure that each half appeals to different people in different ways.

Re: How do you budget your life?
- Good advice David and something that all parents should teach their children by example from a very early age. Trouble is that many people know they need to budget and save, but they have no idea about how to do it. Like Robert Kiyosaki says, financial intelligence should be taught in school.

Re: How can we replace plastic grocery bags?
- [quote="mbrand2222":2f848a7v]I heard those kids went right back from where they lived before. The little boy even got beaten or something horrible by his dad. Something about attracting to much attention. I don't know if they were truths or hype. I hope it was just hype. That would be really sad.[/quote:2f848a7v]
I think you mean his brother. You never see their father in the movie, and his mother is killed. There is a lot of sad things that happen in the movie, but yet the one boy, who gets on the show, always keeps his spirits high and is a great encouragement. It made me wonder if I would have done the same things they did in the movie had I been in the same situation. I'm guessing I would because survival is necessary, and we do what we must to survive.
Don't be put off by the sadness. It's an excellent movie.
Re: Does your font matter?
- I would say a webmaster should use a font that is easy to read and doesn't strain the eyes. There's plenty out there that won't. If it fits the style of your site, then go for it.
I would have to agree with you, GT, that eccentric font should be used for offline marketing materials if the purpose is to build their brand with the font style. Many companies do this, but if you visit their website you won't see that same font style used for the content of the site. Probably a good thing.
