The Corporate Training Challenge
- Published in CONCHIUS Newsletter 1 March, 2011
There are three fundamental demands on all corporate training and corporate education programs to create high performance in the workplace. The three training demands describe the purpose of all corporate training and directly influence all training design. Corporate trainers need to know and always strive to meet these demands.
After the training program the employees shall:
1. Have the right knowledge and skills (the teams shall get the knowledge and skills needed for doing their job and actively participate in business activities they are involved in)
2. Be able to understand and adapt the learning to their specific situation (creating good teamwork and discipline)
3. Be motivated to use the learning creatively and independently (inspiring a willingness and readiness to solve problems on their own and together with others)
All corporate training programs shall be designed in a way that these three demands are met every time. Training methods used shall be based on research and be scientifically proven. There is no one educational method that can satisfy all three demands alone and at the same time.
Different training methods are needed and are suitable for different purposes. One method that is suitable for fulfilling one training demand may inhibit the fulfillment of another training demand in a specific situation. Instead we introduce three guiding principles. The three principles guide the choice of exercises and help the corporate trainer to evaluate a training design. By correctly using the three guiding principles the training will be balanced to meet all three training demands.
The three guiding principles:
1. Transfer of knowledge and skills
2. Group or team focus
3. Problem solving focus
These three principles complement each other and all three are needed to meet the expectations of creating world-class performance in the workplace.
Explanation of the three principles:
1. Transfer of knowledge and skills - The element of transferring knowledge and skills, usually through a corporate trainer, is common when participants are learning basic knowledge and skills.
2. Group or team focus - Is used to increase learning efficiency and to create emotional team bonding in the group.
3. Problem solving focus - Aims to promote creativity and independence. When participants are engaged in work related problem solving, the environment for learning becomes especially beneficial.
