How Effective Teams Succeed

There is hardly anything more exciting than a team that is working together towards a common goal. It's like magic when you see an organization excel at peak performance.

I'm not sure about you, but I have been part of some amazing teams over my lifetime. In fact, it all started in high school while participating on my high school football team. It was not a cake walk for me to even join the team because my father was totally against me participating in organized sports because he wanted me to continue working in our community grocery store.

Well true to form I wanted to play so bad that I took his offer to no longer live in his house, that's right, I left and went to stay with his mother, my grandmother. I'm no dummy; my dad would never entertain the thought of crossing his mother, besides I had been working in the store since age 10.

As a result of this incident in my young life, I knew I had to be good or be gone. I practiced harder than my teammates because if I failed, I would never hear the end of it from my dad. Playing on my high school football team helped me learn how to be a leader and a follower.

In order for a team to succeed, you must have a good leader, in our case it was our coaching staff. They prepared us for each game by building our physical and mental muscles; you need both to ensure great results.

My high school football team won its first five games and the takeaways included teammates trusting one another to be responsible for their role on the team. We also developed a winning attitude which meant we embraced mental toughness and was not afraid to tap into it.

Lastly, our team was willing to sacrifice our individual aspirations for the good of the team as a whole. The end result was, we made the playoffs for the first time in a long time and we established a solid foundation for winning and understanding what it takes to for effective teams to succeed.

Some of you reading this article may have had a similar experience. Perhaps it may not have been through a sports team, it could have been through a debate team, bowling, cheerleading, or academic and scholastic teams or the military.

Good teams come in odd packages is my perspective on effective teams. Understand what leadership is all about is important for everyone because throughout life, we're either leading or following. After delivering a speech in front of an audience, some attendees ask me what does it take to create an effective team, my response is always the same, and it takes selflessness.

Pushing ones proud to the corner for the good of the team is one of the most profound things people can do. Show me a team with a lot of boastful, arrogant people and I will show you a losing team, no more, no less.

The greater good should always be the goal of an effective team, it doesn't matter what industry and or functional organization one works in. Always remember to do your part when it comes time to contributing to your team, it will make all of the difference. Effective teams succeed because of people like you, those who care enough to sacrifice for the team, not themselves.

Re: Books for Business Owners Re: Books for Business Owners - Hi DougSchadle, Thanks for sharing your favorite business book with us! A good book I'm reading now is "Maximum Achievement: Strategies and Skills That Will Unlock Your Hidden Powers to Succeed" by Brian Tracy as it was a birthday gift from a friend. Tracy's book is helpful in identifying what's important in your life and then setting an action plan to achieve it.
Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness Re: Money Does Not Guarantee Happiness - Thanks for singling this point out, Chris. One book that comes to mind that covers it in an overall approach is "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey. He addresses our inner life and the way it can change our effectiveness home and at work. There are corporations who have taken this model and effectively molded their business around it.

I just watched the Tony Robbins video where he high-5s Al Gore. Good stuff! "Effective leaders have the ability to consistently move themselves and others to action because they understand the "invisible forces" that shape us." Also, "Biography is not destiny... decision is."
Team Building Team Building - Effective team building doesn't seem to be something that most business do well. That's sad since it can have such a positive effect on the business and the employees. I totally agree that taking people out for an event and then laying them off the next day wouldn't do anything to make me feel like part of a team. I've also worked with many people who see through the phony attempts at team building. Chris
