The Decline in Trust & Confidence in Leadership

"We still have the possibility of building a civilization based on Man, where the importance of an enterprise is judged less by its financial profits than by the kind of community it creates; where the measure of a man is his own character, not his power or his wealth. If we have sufficient desire, we can still build a civilization whose leadership rests on the respect and confidence it instills in others and whose standard of life is the quality of life itself"

Charles A. Lindbergh

There are plenty of crises in the world today: financial, oil dependency, climate change, terrorism, health care, overpopulation, a degraded environment, and many more to contemplate. The volume and frequency of these crises are enough to satisfy the most voracious appetite for a challenge. But there is one crisis that trumps them all. It gets little press and is not well-defined or articulated. If resolved, it has the power to lift and strengthen the human spirit. But if unresolved, it can continue to lead us downwards into a chaotic world of protectionism, violence, destruction, greed, and despair. The crisis of which I speak is

"A Crisis of Leadership"

At this time in human history, our world and its inhabitants are in critical need of high- caliber leaders who exhibit the attributes and values of successful and admired leaders from the past. However, what we are experiencing is an alarming display of leadership corruption, fraud, greed, and a disquieting lack of regard for the needs of the greater good. We see it in sports, finance, religion, politics, business, and profit and nonprofit organizations alike. We see it in companies, big and small, and organizational structures of all types.

The lack of ethical leadership is pervasive.

Along with this erosion of leadership values has come a decline in public trust. According to the 2009 National Study of Confidence in Leadership produced by The Harvard Kennedy School Center for Public Leadership, 69% of Americans agree or strongly agree that we have a crisis in leadership today. And this statistic is an improvement since 2005, the first year this study was initiated. At that time, the confidence level was at 70% agreeing or strongly agreeing that there is a crisis-hardly an improvement on which to rejoice.

To me, this loss of confidence in leaders is unacceptable. After all, it is to our leaders that we look for truth and integrity, accountability and altruism, hope and courage. That confidence score should be well below 25%. It should be the exception and not the rule that the public has a basic distrust of its leaders.

An absence of trust of leadership is a recipe for disaster. It truly spells "crisis" and one that is deserving of our attention because leaders play a critical role in shaping the future. The very nature of leadership is to "lead" others towards some common goal or purpose. It is from the conduct and character of leaders that others take their cues.

There are solutions to this crisis in leadership. I have a few ideas and i will share them in subsequent articles. I welcome the opinions and perspectives of others.

Boosting Confidence Boosting Confidence - Confidence is something all of us women could stand to have infused in our blood 24/7! Its one of those areas that many struggle with the most. Through my coaching practice, Ive discovered an underlying thread that seems to undermine confidence in some women. It has to do with confusing true confidence with pride or arrogance. Confidence is being sure of who you are and what you are able to do in a way that does not compare yourself to others. It is not dependent on value because every one of us women is valuable. Pride or arrogance is when someone lifts him or herself above others as if they are more valuable than others. It also seems to be related to "approval addiction" where the self esteem must continually be fed by others or they don't feel good about themselves. Thus, some arrogant people put others down so they can see themselves as above. Confidence is simply being all of the great woman you already are. You want to create a great business and you want to do your job well. It is not prideful to be confident in what you are doing. I invite you to give yourself permission to really let your abilities come forward and see what happens to you and your business as a result. Id also love to hear what methods you have for boosting your own confidence.
Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
