Top Marketing Guru Shares Success Secrets (Part 1)
BACKGROUND: Joe Vitale is an explosive, “results only” marketing consultant and the world’s first Hypnotic Marketer. He is the author of many books, including his book “Spiritual Marketing,” best selling e-book “Hypnotic Writing,” and best-selling Nightingale-Conant audio program,“ ”The Power of Outrageous Marketing.”
INTERVIEW: I had the honor to interview marketing guru, Joe Vitale, in 2002 for an entire hour. Although it was four years ago, his wisdom about realizing success in business and life is still timeless. In this 3 part interview,we cover such topics as: hypnotic marketing, the 5 principles of spiritual marketing, secrets of top marketers like Madonna and Trump, and his TARGET marketing formula.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D: Joe, to what can you attribute your extraordinary success in business and marketing? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: The short answer is ... I have done nothing but follow my enthusiasm. It’s a variation of Joseph Campbell’s “follow your bliss,” but it means a more to me . Whatever I get enthused about ... excited about .... passionate about, whether it be books, marketing, magic, whatever, I pursued it with a *focused intent.*
That, to me, is a major key to success. That does not mean that I was so addictive, my life fell apart. Rather I had intentions and clarity about my intentions so I could focus on them while still maintaining balance in other areas. That is the quick answer.
The long answer: I learned what I needed to know as I needed to know it. Eg., when my first book - “Zen and The Art of Writing” - came out in 1984, I did not know much about marketing. While I had studied it in college, I did not know the “street smart level” of marketing.
Then when I published my book, since my publisher did not know marketing, I had to learn it. As a result, I sold more books than my publisher did. As word got out, people started to coming to me, asking me to teach them. And I started getting clients.
If there are any elements of my success, it’s going for my dreams, following my enthusiasm and learning whatever I needed to know along the way.
------------------------------------------------------------------
D: From whom did you learn the most over the years?
------------------------------------------------------------------
J: Out of the 3000 books I have in my library and the many self help, spiritual books I have read, I have learned the most from a book called “The Magic of Believing” by Claude Bristol ... marketing-wise, the book that changed my life was “The Robert Collier Letter Book” by Robert Collier. The last book has legendary status among marketers. That book changed my life. I was an ok copywriter before that. I was a hypnotic copywriter after that.
I am very much a disciple of John Kapples. John, the VP, BBDO Advertising Agency. John has written many marketing books - all of which are worth studying and learning from. He is probably considered the greatest copy writer who ever lived.
I wrote a book on the business methods of P.T. Barnum. I don’t want to overlook how much that P.T. Barnum has influenced me. He was a marketing genius.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D: How did you learn about P.T. Barnum? Through his autobiography? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: I knew about Barnum, just like everyone else, as the circus promoter. But there was a book by Og Mandino called “The University of Success.” In it, there was an excerpt from P.T. Barnum’s autobiography. I loved it and, as a result, read his autobiography. What a story teller! What a showman! What a brilliant genius who was able to take the commonplace and turned into a place people would pay to see. I was mesmerized by the man.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D: In today’s marketplace, what separates Joe Vitale from other marketing consultants? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: Probably the spiritual dimension. For the longest time, I suppressed talking about it. Now that I have written the book, “Spiritual Marketing,” I am very open to talking about my inside out approach to marketing.
I practiced spiritual, metaphysical principles in my business for 20 years, but did not tell my clients I did it that way. It was a private thing. I read rare spiritual books - like by Neville. He worked with visualization and feelings, but went deeper about being clear about intentions and making sure there was not any self-sabotage there.
I think what separates me from other marketers is the spiritual side. I apply spiritual principles to business.
---------------------------------------------------------------
D: What does “spiritual marketing” mean to you?
---------------------------------------------------------------
J: Spiritual marketing, to me, means operating my business and creating my marketing from my heart, not my head. I say “spiritual marketing” is psychological. It is metaphysical. It is also practical.
In my book, “Spiritual Marketing,” I wrote about a 5 step process for creating wealth, or anything else, from the inside out. My spiritual marketing approach is heart-based.
So rather than looking in the newspaper for what is the hot trend and then jumping on it, I look within myself and see what is knocking at my door to pursue. That may or may not coincide with the newspaper. I will have more fun and more success by following an “inside out” news reporting than and “outside in” reporting.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D: Would you be willing to share the 5 principles from your “Spiritual Marketing” book?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: Sometimes, you don’t need all 5 of the principles. Sometimes you can get by with one or two. For the sake of clarity, let me walk through all 5.
STEP 1: KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T WANT.
Most people are on step #1 ... complaining about what they don’t want. I say use it as your springboard to step #2.
STEP 2: CHOOSE WHAT YOU DO WANT.
There is tremendous power is stating your intention. For those who don’t know what they want, I say go to step #1. Look at what you are complaining about and turn it around into what you want.
STEP 3: GET CLEAR.
This is something that isn’t talked about enough. When you state what you want, usually the doubts, the fears, the negativity start surfacing. Unless you get clear of that, it will get in the way of creating what you want. Getting clear will create what you want faster than you thought was humanly possible.
STEP 4: FEEL WHAT IT WOULD BE LIKE TO HAVE, DO OR BE WHAT YOU HAVE ASKED FOR
Emotion is the fuel that brings these desires into being. That is the fire. Feel it and you will bring it into being.
STEP 5: LET GO.
This is often a hard step. We can’t orchestrate the Universe. Our ego is too small. The Universe sees the big picture better than we do. Say what you want, then let go in trying to achieve it. It may come to you in a surprising way.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
D: With regard to your Step 3 and getting clear of your doubts and limited beliefs,
is there any particular practice or way that you do that?
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
J: For me, *nothing* compares to the power in working with somebody else ... what I call a “miracles” coach in getting clear. Because, most of the time, if we try to get clear of our own doubts or blocks, we are just bouncing off the walls of our own box.
We need someone outside of that box to help us get clear of what is holding us back. When I find that happens, results usually happen pretty magically and pretty quickly.
The greatest technique to get clear is to work with a “miracles” coach. Someone you trust. Someone who can listen lovingly and report back to you what they are seeing. It will help you see things differently than you have been seeing them.
To be more specific, if there is any one method I would recommend , it is the “option” process. The “option” process has been written about by Barry Neille Kaufman in his book, “To Love Is To Be Happy With ...” It is a gentle method of questioning beliefs, coming from a foundation of total, unconditional love. True miracles of happen with me with that method.
REMINDER: Check out Parts 2 and 3 of this interview where Joe will speak more specifically about Hypnotic Marketing, Advertising and, as a final question, the business legacy he wants to impart to others.
