What Does The Secret Have To Do With Great Leadership?

It's hard to imagine that just about a year ago everywhere you went the latest buzz on the internet, TV and personal conversations was Rhonda Byrne's movie "The Secret." So much so, that Rhonda Byrnes was named one of the most influential people in 2007.

Regardless of what you thought about the movie, there is one benefit you can't deny. It "woke up" millions of people to becoming more conscious and responsible for the outcomes in their lives. The key difference between mediocrity and greatness is consciousness. Mediocre people live their lives in stupor from the "outside in," often looking at external events as the driver of their results. Great leaders and individuals are "awake" -- operating from the "inside out" -- and see themselves as the architects of their destiny.

In the last year, I have been amazed at how many of my CEO and executive clients have sheepishly admitted that they not only watched the movie "The Secret." They also started to apply the principles in the movie and many experienced profound change and/or breakthroughs. One CEO claimed that on a daily basis, as a result of the movie, he affirmed success in a very tough, stuck negotiation with a key investor in his company. He was convinced it was his daily ritual of claiming success that eventually brought this stalemate to a happy ending for his company.

Another CEO told me that the executive team watched the movie to kickoff their annual planning session. As a result, the team set much more aggressive company growth goals thus shifting the consciousness and thinking of the leadership team to a "can do" attitude ever since.

While I would be the first one to admit, based on my background and training, that "The Secret" treats the topics of personal breakthrough, greatness and achievement very superficially, its fundamental premise still provides a powerful message. The only difference between ordinary and extraordinary achievers are their minds, their thinking, their focus.

Extraordinary individuals are ordinary people who make extraordinary decisions. I remember hearing Anthony Robbins about 15 years ago say in a weekend intensive "it is the decisions in our lives that shape our destiny." The word "decision" comes from the latin word 'decidare" which means "to cut off all other possibilities." Great leaders go beyond hoping and dreaming to claiming and deciding what their destiny and that of their company will be.

So what does "The Secret" have to do with great leadership? Everything. If you have not seen the movie, I recommend watching it and keeping an open mind. If you have, I recommend watching it again since it is human nature to go back to old habits and thinking.

In future articles, I will address how to drive true change in you and your organization from the "cause" -- rather than the "effect" -- side of your results equation. the real "secret" to awaken your own potential and those you are leading. How to upgrade your own "inner game," thus, driving you and your organization to a winning future.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami
Victoria's Secret - Too Sexy? Victoria's Secret - Too Sexy? - This will be upsetting for some men. I just heard a report about Victoria's Secret and it was interesting. Their sales were down drastically in the 4th quarter of 2007 and the report was about how they are thinking the company has gotten too far away from the heritage that made it the blockbuster company it is. They are thinking the ads etc have become too sexy and the plan (at the moment) is to make the ads more sophisticated. That would be like the Super Bowl commercial which was very tasteful, but very different from any Victoria's Secret I've seen lately. Who do you all think the current sexy ads are targeting? I think its the men that they hope will buy these items for their female significant others. I hate to give Omarosa any kudos - but most women aren't "sold" on an item by an ad of a near naked sexy woman. Shri
Re: Success Re: Success - I study success intently, and would like to share: Here's two excellent and nearly identical success-formulas from a couple of the world's masters. FIRST FORMULA: 1. Passionate Desire 2. Clear, Definite Purpose 3. Committed Decision 4. Take Action In Faith (Bonus Secret Sauce: 5. Repeat Consistently) I made a video about this, but am not allowed to link it yet. Google "Ryze Success Steps" for it. Oh, and this is Napoleon Hill's (Master Of Success Laws)'s Formula. SECOND FORMULA: 1. Passionate Desire 2. Understand It Is Already Done (Faith) 3. Relax & Allow It To Unfold (Go about your life calmly) This one is courtesy of Abraham-Hicks (inspiration for the movie The Secret). Hope that helps!
