A Leader who Understands His Responsibility to Lead
Leaders have a unique role. They must be willing to step out when others are too afraid, risk more than others think wise, and strive for more than others think is possible.
It is this type of Leadership that has shaped our world, and therefore is the one thing that makes a leader's role among the most coveted. It is also for this reason that we must proceed with caution when being given such a privileged position.
Leaders are many things, but among those things there is something they certainly are not: Dictators. Dictators rule by fear. There is the tendency to cloud their inability to lead with a dominant fear and appearance of disregard, and sometimes even disdain for those over whom they lead. This is a trait easily found among those who want to lead, but have yet to understand its meaning.
Contrary to this position, leaders serve those that follow them. The actions they pursue are performed with the best interest of all at heart. Leaders possess the confidence that does not require validation from others to move forward in the direction they know they should go. This type of confidence comes from a desire to leave their profession, and their world, a better place than when they found it. Selfishness has no place for a true leader, and this is why they are becoming increasingly hard to find.
If your role request leadership of you, remember: It is how well you serve the interest and overall good of others that will determine the effectiveness of your ability to lead. Do not take your privilege lightly. Lead with the conviction that your mission is to leave the world a better place than when you found it regardless of the opposition and those who choose to stand against you for your drive to do what is right. The rewards belong to you for your integrity. Make every action based upon this principle and you will always make decisions in the best interest of your team.
