Connecting With the Right People

"Surround yourself only with people who will lift you up."

- Oprah Winfrey

Leadership involves the ability to make difficult decisions. Including those with whom you should surround yourself. Leaders have the responsibility of not just leading by example, but qualifying those whom they choose as associates to influence their decisions for the greater good.

Note the most important part of that previous statement is "the greater good". Most people choose what is comfortable. Including those they choose as close business associates. They want those who naturally agree with them. Those who won't seriously challenge their decisions and the values behind them. This type of selection may make life easier, but it also isolates and limits greatly one's effectiveness as a leader. Reason being: Leaders must be of strong character. This does not mean pushing ahead without regard for others and the long-term result of your actions. Strong character means the ability to step outside oneself, observe the best course of action for all involved, and making the decision based upon core principles that benefit everyone involved. This also means that if the situation is not plausible, challenging the person or systems that are not best for the overall morale of those affected. Leaders surround themselves with those whose core values make the world a better place. Is this the case with the company you keep? Do they show this by their actions? More importantly, do you show this by yours? This will define your leadership. Therefore, connect with the right people who will give you the best opportunity to succeed as a leader.
