So the real question is: What type of leader are you? Are you driven by the myths of leadership, or the true grit required to achieve success? It is so easy to follow the path of least resistance because as it has been quoted:

"The road to success is dotted with many tempting parking places." ~Author Unknown

How do you find the secrets to overcoming this common temptation? How do you persist past the Leadership Myths that trip so many others into making excuses and failing? The answer is simple: Don't make excuses, and you won't fail.

Leaders focus solely on the outcome. They know what they want, why they want it, and (most importantly), the positive effects the outcome will have on the people they are privileged to impact. It is these factors that serve as the driving force to success in the mind of a leader. Notice that we did not focus on the monetary gain, the prestige, or the popularity that may or may not exist at the end of the rainbow. Rather, the focus has always been on the positive impact their actions will mean to the lives of those affected by their actions. This skill takes maturity in leadership. This requires a focus that will go beyond the myths that hang up many potential leaders, and results in a "stall" for their effectiveness. Here are five "hard facts" regarding popular Leadership Myths every true leader must know:

- Just because you're busy, it doesn't make you important
- People may report to you, but that doesn't make your leadership effective
- Contrary to popular belief, leadership is not about you. In fact, it never was
- It isn't their fault if your plan did not succeed
- Leadership is not a popularity contest where the most liked receives a prize at the award ceremony

If you are in a position of leadership, take your role as a servant seriously. If popularity or receiving a prize onstage at an award ceremony is your motivating factor, please, do your people a favor and do not assume the leadership role. Find the maturity needed to work past the myths and focus on the outcome for those that follow you. This is the destiny of true leaders. If the privilege of leading is your present circumstance, or in your future, adjust your focus so you may lead in such a way you'll constantly empower the lives of those that follow.
