Innovation Calls For Leadership

"Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail." Success is one of the leading causes of failure. Market and customer research is a leading cause of tunnel vision.

• When trains were first developed, the King of Prussia confidently predicted,"No one will pay good money to get from Berlin to Potsdam in one hour when he can ride his horse there in one day for free".

• In 1903, the president of the Michigan Savings Bank gave this market advice to Horace Rackham, Henry Ford's lawyer, "The horse is here to stay. The automobile is only a fad, a novelty".

• A British Parliamentary Committee assessed whether Edison's light bulb would ever be useful. They concluded it was "unworthy of the attention of practical or scientific men".

• Edison himself made these market assessments, "the phonograph is not of any commercial value" and "the radio craze will die out in time".

• In 1946, Darryl Zanuck, then head of 20th Century Fox predicted, "Video (television) won't hold any market it captures after the first six months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night".

• "A man has been arrested in New York for attempting to extort funds from ignorant and superstitious people by exhibiting a device which he says will convey the human voice any distance over metallic wires so that it will be heard by the listener at the other end. He calls this instrument a telephone. Well-informed people know that it is impossible to transmit the human voice over wires." - News item in an 1868 New York paper

• In 1980 a Wall Street auto analyst told a Senate committee, "General Motors, already the automotive king of the road, will become even more dominant by the mid-1980's and will be the only auto company capable of building a full range of cars and trucks."

• And from some early market research on steam ships - "What, sir, would you make a ship sail against the wind and currents by lighting a bonfire under her deck? I pray you excuse me. I have no time to listen to such nonsense." - Napoleon Bonaparte to engineer and inventor Robert Fulton

Management is concerned with understanding and improving what is. Disciplined management calls for rigorous market and customer research to pinpoint the performance gaps seen by our current customers and partners.

But as vital as that is, it's just the beginning. Far too many service and quality improvement professionals, customer satisfaction specialists, and market researchers stop here. They become prisoners of the present. Like the old elephant that finally has the chain removed from his leg, they've become conditioned to never go beyond the radius of past experience.

Seizing the opportunities of tomorrow calls for leadership. It means taking off the blinders of what is in order to see what could be. To lead is to look beyond prevailing products, current services, today's competitors, and existing markets. Customer, partner, and market leadership means exploring, searching, and creating new and unique pathways that lead to our vision.

Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight Re: Business Women Peer Mentoring Spotlight - Hi Everyone, Gosh, I REALLY appreciate your concrete feedback. This was far more than I expected and I'm glad you said what you thought straight out. Each of you have shared something of value and I want to take some more time to think and really go over what each of you have said. However, I can see there are some things I need to change right away. What an interesting point about a NEW program perhaps making people think they are guinea pigs! This is NOT what I want to convey! It's funny how we can see some things so clearly in others while not always seeing it for ourselves! I must admit there are a few things I've been meaning to change (like my bio which is very outdated). Obviously, these things need to be higher on my priority list. You caught me like the plumber who puts his clients first and doesn't get around to fixing his own tap! As far as my target market, I do feel quite strongly about working with Women Leaders and doing Leadership Coaching with them. It's non-negotiable in my books. In my Executive Coaching training, the terms "Leaders" and "Executives" are interchangable. To me, an Executive is a Leader and so is the Business Woman or Entrepreneur who is CEO of her own business. I love working with decision makers! What I did learn is that I need to avoid opening up the Leadership term beyond what I described above. I'm also wondering if there is a misunderstanding with the general public as to what Leadership Coaching really is. Leadership Coaching is all about developing your leadership skills, both as a people manager and in more effectively running and growing the business. There is ALWAYS room for growth in some way. As well, sometimes, we just need a sounding board to clarify what our next BEST step is. In fact, if a woman thinks she has nothing to work on, then we aren't a good Client/Coach fit anyway. How can she grow if she doesn't see the value of expressing ALL of the great ability within her? How can her company grow if she doesn't see the value of strategic planning for the next best level? Thanks again to you all! I will go back to my website and really question whether I am conveying the right message. I got more than I bargained for in this Spotlight... you generously offered way more than I was asking. I think we could be on to something great for the Forum. Now it's time to let someone else have the spotlight. It would be great if everyone took a turn! In gratitude, Tami

enRoute ads - 10 days with my new salesmen enRoute ads - 10 days with my new salesmen - Hi Guys, As some of you may know I hired a sales person for my business. I picked him amongst 50+ interviews, so I did do my due diligence. For any of you who have had experience with outbound sales reps in your company could you please shed some light on these statistics and let me know what you think: Days Employed: 11 Calls Made: 200 Average length of call: 3 minutes Sales: 0 Closing Rate: 0 Previous closing rate at Astral Media: 5% He is selling billboards instead of radio, for an unestablished company vs. an established one There seems to be large gaps in calling made in his daily log, on average he is making 20 calls a day. I am going to try to increase this by providing him with calling lists versus him creating his own. (I will keep you posted on this). I am just wondering, in your experience, what kind of regiment do you have your cold callers work on, 6 hours? 4 hours? 7 hours? And did you notice a curve occur with closing rates as time progressed and experience increased? If so when did you notice this begin to occur, I have him on a 1,500.00 NON-RECOVERABLE sales draw salary which ends in 6 weeks (approx).
