According to this verse in Joshua, there is a reward for courage. If this is true, why is it so difficult for many to walk in courage? Because many times the cost of the reward is great. But isn't that the way life is? There is no victory without a battle, no testimony without a test, and no six-pack without thousands of sit-ups.
Over the years of my leadership journey, I have had to make some very tough and difficult decisions. Decisions that would affect my life, my families life and many times others lives as well. Every time I would agonize over whether the decision was right or wrong. Especially when other people were involved. If it were just me and it didn't work out, ok I can survive and move on, but when others are involved, the stakes are a little higher.
Since courage is a requirement for being a good leader I had to develop a series of questions for me to answer when courage was needed. Here they are:
1. If a decision is not made, what will be the major consequences?
2. If I fail to make a decision how many people will be affected?
3. Can I live with myself if I don't make a decision?
4. Are you more afraid of the criticism and backlash, then doing the right thing?
5. Have I asked for counsel from trusted others, and they say the decision is the right
one?
6. In the midst of not making a decision, our people's lives being affected in a negative
way?
7. What does not making a right decision say about you?
Tough decisions are hard, if you are in a leadership position and you need to fire someone, that is tough. If you are a business owner needing to take the next step to hire your first employee, that can be a scary task. Maybe you have to tell on a friend or family member that is doing the wrong thing, all these decisions are tough and require courage.
Let me share a few things that may assist you in being courageous.
1. The criticism will hurt and be painful, but the inner peace of doing the right thing will
help you survive.
2. Surround yourself with those that are closest to you and draw from their strength.
3. Any friendships you loose in the process will serve you well in the future.
4. People may never see you as doing the right thing, but you will know, and that's all that
matters.
Some of you are a courageous decision away from experiencing the success you desire.
