Legal Marketing: Commenting on blog posts

Commenting on blog posts is just as important as writing blog posts.

Everyone seems to think once you write a post, that’s it. Post it and they will come. False. It’s important to establish yourself as a thought leader in the blog world to succeed, and making thoughtful comments on other posts can boost your credibility.

Here is a list of things to consider when commenting on blogs:

  1. Make sure you keep up with the comments on your blog and respond to them. These people took the time to read and comment on your blog, and it’s your responsibility to continue the conversation they started. Don’t ignore them or delete them. If you agree with their comment, tell them. If you don’t agree with their idea, respond and tell them why. This, of course, doesn’t apply to completely inappropriate comments, but as the blog owner, you can decide what is appropriate and what is not – and delete those that are out of line or spam.
  2. When writing comments, make sure you don’t just say “Hey, great post!” or “Hey, awful post.” Put some thought into your comments. You never know when a potential client is reading.
  3. Make sure you don’t write anything inappropriate or use bad language. You can get kicked off that person’s blog site forever, and the impression you make there could spread far and wide before you know it. Would you want someone writing inappropriate things on your blog posts?
  4. Brevity is the soul of wit, so keep your comments brief as possible. You never want to write a comment that’s as long – or longer – than the post. Keep your comments brief and to the point. This makes it easier for people to read and respond to what you have to say.
  5. Being a great commenter is also a good networking tool. You can meet people, and even gain new clients, by responding to comments. Try to focus on blogs that you know your potential and current clients are reading to demonstrate your knowledge and experience.
Commenting is a great and easy way to expose you and your law firm to new potential clients and distinguish you as a thought leader. So dedicate a few minutes of your day to this marketing effort. Writing blog posts can take quite a bit of time, but commenting only takes a few minutes. Get to it!

Re: Tactics for Blog Traffic Re: Tactics for Blog Traffic - One really easy way to get yourself blogging more often is to repurpose your blog posts...republish them on article sites (or put a couple of short blog posts together into one article), put them in your newsletters, put a quantity of blog posts together into an ebook or even a full-fledged book. Also turn your blog posts into audios, for blog "readers" to listen to rather than read; or a video, for "readers" to watch. Again, group several into a teleclass, etc. And vice versa. Look at your existing articles, ebooks, teleclasses -- can you break them down into several or a dozen blog posts? This also has the advantage of having an ongoing theme for a period of time on your blog, which brings readers back to read the next installment. Plus the added bonus that you can sit down with one article and write 3 blog posts in one sitting, then schedule them out...and go on vacation! Lots more that can be done in this manner, let your creativity be your guide!

I never comment on a blog unless I read the post first and then only if I can make a good comment. I don't ever want to spam. MichelleJ
