Legal Marketing: What is link juice?

Guest post by: Tom Matte

Article Overview: Link Juice is a term used to refer to the ranking of your website in Google. It sounds silly, but link juice is very important. It’s similar to SEO, in that every website needs link juice in order to gain more viewers. The more link juice you have, the higher your listing on a Google search. So instead of having your firm’s website on page 5 of Google’s search for “law firms specializing in employment law” you can be on page 1 if you have enough link juice.

Legal Marketing: What is link juice?

Link juice is a term used to refer to the ranking of your Website in Google. Every website needs link juice in order to gain more viewers because it is how Google determines which site is "better."

It sounds silly, but link juice is very important. It’s similar to search engine optimization (SEO), in that every website needs link juice in order to gain more viewers. The more link juice you have, the higher your listing on a Google search. So instead of having your firm’s website on page 5 of Google’s search for “law firms specializing in employment law,” you can be on page 1 if you have enough link juice.

Link juice is how Google determines which site is “better.” For example, if your law firm’s site is linked to popular sites like Legal Marketing Reader and/or Law.com, and your competitor’s site isn’t linked to any other sites, your site will be higher in the rankings due to its link juice.

This is important for every social media network you use at your law firm as well. Make sure you are linking your site to your YouTube videos and the other way around too. Make sure your Facebook page has your law firm’s website linked to it. Also, another great way to gain more link juice is to comment on LinkedIn discussions. Make sure your comments are linked to your LinkedIn page–BUT don’t spam!

Note: Google also uses SEO or “keywords,” in addition to link juice, to determine rankings.

Re: Link Building Tactics Re: Link Building Tactics -
To decrease spam lots of sites make certain links no-follow. What that means is visitors can still click on them and follow them to your site, BUT bots cannot. So while you may get a few extra visitors, the links themselves will not be counted by search engine like google.[/quote:1fklbtpr]
Just a point of clarification on Jeremy's post here. Google robots will follow a no-follow link but it won't recognize any Page Rank being passed through that link.[/quote:1fklbtpr] Evan, I'm still a bit confused. The google bots will follow the link...but they don't give any "link juice" to your site (if you were the one who posted the link), correct? Or something like that? On my blog/website, comment links are all nofollows. I did a bit of research on this, and I'm still not quite sure, but the majority opinion seems to be, as a webmaster, to choose no-follow links for comments as a deterrent for spam. I've actually had more than a few people post a comment and *threaten* to not post again if I don't change my links to remove the nofollow. To them, I said good-riddance...if you are only posting on my blog to get better search engine rankings, then you're missing the point. If you have something valuable to contribute, then I welcome that, and the community on my site will value your comment and click thru. As a commenter on other's blogs, what I really want is people to be informed and then intrigued to find out more, and click on my link. I don't really care if I get "link juice" from it (perhaps I should, but I don't.)

Re: Search Engine Optimization Re: Search Engine Optimization - Very true, but you don't want to focus on just getting a lot of links for SEO. The important thing is to get the right links. Links from respected, trusted sites that have plenty of backlinks themselves are the best place to start. Quality over quantity wins hands down. If you received a link from a pagerank 5 site, you would be receiving roughly 2,000 times as much link juice as if you found a PR1 site. It obviously pays to put your efforts on the higher pr sites of the world.
Re: Backlinking packages Re: Backlinking packages - Certainly, the key concept of back linking is to gain the link juice with respect to the quality traffic. You should have clear communication while exchanging links it helps really a website to get the high quality back links.
Re: What I'm reading this weekend - Feb 18, 2011 Re: What I'm reading this weekend - Feb 18, 2011 - Hi Evan, This looks like an interesting list. I've got my eye on several of those topics, but to point out one, the effect of tweeting on ranking is of particular interest as I have just mentioned on the AffiliatePowerGroup forum that I make a point of tweeting blog posts when I post a comment so that both the blogger and my comment link get some extra juice... Hope to find some time today to read the blogs.
