Whether we are willing to accept it or not, we all live in an ever-changing fast-paced knowledge-based economy. Gone are the days when people worked with one organization for twenty or thirty years. On average, a professional will change jobs five to seven times in their career.

The average turnover in corporate America is now about two and a half years. Apparently, the only way to stay ahead of the career game anymore is to make frequent progressive jumps. Staying in one position for ten years no longer demonstrates staying power or loyalty to the organization. In today’s economy, it comes across to most employers as a lack of ambition. These progressive jumps are typically labeled strategic career moves.

While strategic career moves are becoming the norm, do not make the mistake of interpreting this trend as a license to change jobs every time someone offers you five thousand dollars more in base salary. At the same time understand that you cannot stay in one position for the rest of your career and hope to earn a competitive salary.

Changing companies can be a traumatic experience and should not be done lightly. There is an almost infinite number of ways to look for a new or better job. The trick is to focus almost all your attention on those avenues that deliver the best results. Doing this, will greatly increase the odds of finding the exact job you want.

The circumstances that usually prompt a person to perform a job search are:

Voluntary:
- Looking for a career move, more salary, better position, relocation, etc.
- Looking because you do not like the company where you are currently working

Involuntary
- Looking because you were laid off
- Looking because you have quit your job

A word of advice. Do not quit your current job without another job in hand. No matter how bad the working conditions or how intolerable the work environment, stick it out. The old cliché about it being easy to find a job when you already have a job is one hundred percent true.

To get a job, the people looking to hire someone like you have to know you exist, be aware of your skills and know how to contact you. Assuming you have a resume that effectively represents your skills and abilities, the next logical step is to make sure the people who are hiring see it.
