Build your power base

A major area of study for any executive should be power and influence - and any coach worth his or her certification should be able to help executives grow their power base and be more influential.

Here is an effective framework for learning -- or if you are a coach, developing in your clients -- the art of power and influence:

First, start with one-on-one influence. Most executives don’t understand the need to vary their influence style and strategy depending on the situation and their goal (In fact, many executives don’t even set an explicit goal before going into an influence situation). The coach can help executives choose the right style for the right situation. Does the client want to convince, get compliance, get commitment, or generate alignment? There are different styles that work in each situation.

As part of this training, executive coaches can develop an entire practice around working with clients to rehearse high-stakes conversations and make them more effective prior to a key meeting.

Next, shift to how to coach executives to get an idea accepted throughout an organization. You can’t influence “them.” Influence happens one person at a time. Coaches can help executives see the political playing field and figure out how to get enough people on board to make an idea happen.

Finally, executives should focus on building their power base — up, down, across, and outside the organization. Formal authority is very limited, especially these days. Coaches need to help clients build strong business relationships and alliances. That way, they can get things done more rapidly in their own organizations, and also assure career success if and when they choose (or get asked) to leave.

During this entire process, coaches should look at their own influence styles and, most importantly, power base. That way, they “do the work” too, and also build a stronger network to develop new clients.

Women Entrepreneur Tips Women Entrepreneur Tips - Thank you LeoOliveros, I found #4 particularly true in my case: 4. The Enterprise Must Include the Power of Power Networks. As a conductor of your own enterprise, you can not see yourself as a one-woman-show. You must choose to utilize the power people in your life, by asking for help when you need it, and effectively delegating in order to capitalize on your strengths and that of your power network. When certain experts are not represented in your power network, you must actively seek advisors or mentors and develop a team of specialists, so the benefits are received by everyone involved in the power network - the true Power of Power Networks.
Psychics & horoscopes! Psychics & horoscopes! - I have never sought the help of a psychic and I deffinately do not believe in horoscopes. Although I do believe "some" psychics could hold a special gift (like the ones that help police) occassionaly, but horoscopes are not believable in my book. I I believe the power of suggestion (reading a horoscope) is the real power there. You read or hear how things should go for you and the power of that suggestion could make it happen. Your mind believes it will happen, so it does. It's Sort of like how if you fully believe you are sick (when you are not), your body reacts as if it really is, therefore developing symptoms.
Re: 3 Steps To Startup Success Re: 3 Steps To Startup Success - Emma's point about a website is a good one. One thing anybody who wants to start a business can do is set up a website. You can do this before you start your business, while still working in a regular job. Your website doesn't even have to sell anything at this stage (although I'd recommend that you monetize it using Google Adwords, Amazon, affiliate products etc)... Use your website as a kind of online resource centre where you can put together your ideas and build a knowledge base about the business and market niche you want to get into. Write articles about the business, products, problems people face. By doing this you will: 1. Have a place where you can focus and develop your thinking about your business idea. 2. Build an online presence NOW that will greatly assist you in marketing your business when you are ready to set it up. 3. Establish your reputation as an expert in your field before you set up your business. 4. Give you an outlet to test your business ideas before you take the plunge... Good luck! DH
Re: Great start, but no finish Re: Great start, but no finish - My advise is FOCUS on your business. Focusing is the main factor to succeed on business. If you have a great idea, then follow it only, don't look anywhere else. It is especially essential in an online business. Because there are a lot of mind blowing sales letters promising millions dolllars or overnight success, people find it difficult to concentrate on one business and they lose their energy. Concept is simple. 1- Have a good idea; 2- Build your business on it; 3- Monetize your business; 4- Promote it; 5- Build list of responsive customers; 6- Maintain You Business. Focusing and not fearing from competition (instead you can learn from competitiors) are main tips of billionaires ,BTW. Orxan
